I took some quick pictures of my girlfriend in her courtyard. I used a DIY mini soft box with my hot shoe flash. I like how they turned out.. critique is welcome.

Lovely girlfriend. Why are you cutting off half of her head?

Thanks guys.. After looking through my pictures I realized I cut off the tops of heads on a lot of my portraits, haha. Gonna need to work on that.

It could be that you are shooting horizontal format a lot. Try turning that camera on it's side and shoot verticle for portraits. Not that there is anything wrong with a horizontal portrait, I just think you can get a better frame with a 1 or 2 person portrait in vertical format and get more facial info in that frame.

The DIY flash diffuser seems to create a nice soft, even light. Well done!

Cute girlfriend, keep shooting her, she seems to like the attention you pay her and that's a good thing! ;)

Thanks for the tip. I tried shooting vertically and I just really didn't like the composition. I'll have to keep practicing my vertical framing!

Just a reminder....its acceptable to cut off the tops of heads in photography. Read Scott Kelby's books, and go back and look at pictures of women.

Fashion is very often shot that way, just so you can get close to the face.

Yeah I am. Sorry I didn't clarify.. I shot a lot of pictures from this set vertically and I didn't like any of them. I do shoot in portrait mode often.. just not with this particular set of pictures.

I actually find it rather odd when the top of the head is not cut off in a tight headshot...especially horizontal.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

A quick look through any fashion mag, and you will see lots of shots where the top of the head is gone, lopped off.. lol
