If you're just getting started in photography, you should know that the barriers to entry in still imaging are torn to pieces. Expect to work very hard doing excellent work (and have a good capital outlay) or get trampled by all the new rebel owners that are just like you. It is what it is, many people posting on this forum have been doing this for at least three years. They are ahead of the curve, a rapidly, crazy changing curve. Get in the game, go crazy fast, or get squished.

I don't think anything about them at all, The same can not be said for people so insecure and chippy that they start threads like this.

Or were you talking about THIS guy ?

But I guess that would be just too funny :-)

Its always the teenage girls that get their dslr kit, and then they post all their pictures on fb, and they try to take these artsy photos. I always lol.

Its good that they're getting into it, and there's a learning curve. But all of them always think they're taking these great photos when in reality......

I have mixed feelings on it. I started out that way(but not charging) and just took a lot of pictures at events I went to because I enjoy it. After a while people asked if I could take pictures FOR them. They compensated me(very little as I wasn't comfortable yet) and after doing jobs like that I was confident enough to do it on the side.

I don't support the ones that buy a kit and the next day start booking jobs, but I do support those like me that stumbled into and decided to run with it, knowing my limitations of course.

I second the "who cares" notion.

If somebody takes excellent pictures with a kit lens, it is not my place to question their merit. If someone wants to pay said photographer for his or her services and is happy with the result, then it seems to me that everybody's happy -- except for the gear snob who thinks that having $10,000 in gear automatically makes him a superior photographer.

yup if they threaten your work, and your established... www.careerbuilder.com (external link) is for you.

the clients they get, are the ones you dont need...

true enough with that.

you don't see ferrari, porsche, lamborghini, and such complaining due when a new economy car is released. it's not their market so it doesn't worry them.

most the time the craigslist adds are working for those that are your cheap client who makes life difficult and is never satisfied even though they only paid you $10 bucks for 300 full res pictures on a CD as well as all copyrights to those images. now they want a reshoot, and a discout for their friend and family members and so on.

unless that is the market segment you are after then it really shouldn't bother which way they go.

now off I go to put a craigslist adv. up :D.

they automatically think they're a photographer. But it goes beyond that. They start a page on FB and charge to take pictures.

What do you think about this?

Good luck to them.

Isn't that the American Dream?

doh!

This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated due to multiple third-party notifications of copyright infringement.

That sucks. I wanted to see it.

I know a few people who are like that. I have decent equipment, but I still don't have what I would need to start charging people. OR the experience.

It bothers me if their photos are bad, but I don't go off complaining about it. I just see their work, think "They have quite a bit to learn.", and then leave it at that.
I was in the same spot when I started five years ago. Although I never really had issues with composition and I never dared show a photo that was badly under or overexposed. Still, we all have to start somewhere.

Also, I found the video in case anyone wants to see it :]

That video was hilarious and ridiculous at the same time.

As for the OP, everyone does have to start somewhere. If they can deliver the results, power to them. But in most cases, it's the basis for our entertainment like the video above.

Really there is a minimum for different fields of photography where a kit lens and Rebel just aren't going to cut it and be able to deliver results regardless if it's a seasoned pro or someone just starting out behind the camera. Example would be performing arts where high ISO performance and fast lenses are a must.

that's funny I have a friend who did this very thing tonight on FB... his status update says "if anyone needs any kind of photography done let me know." ... He has an entry level Nikon with his pop up flash and he just discovered photoshop where he converts about all his pics to B&W then coloring some weird object in the photo... I am by no means a pro but this guy is a joke...

I know, right? I'm just sayin'...
