they automatically think they're a photographer. But it goes beyond that. They start a page on FB and charge to take pictures.

What do you think about this?

I think they are awesome and more power to them. I would advise their customers to check their work before they buy, though.

I bought my first slr and got into photography in may, about 5 months ago...and I have a facebook page and charge for my services. Is that wrong? I have about 3k in equipment and I think My website shows that I've come a long way in the last 5 months. I can't wait to see the images Ill create next year.

Nothing wrong. There are no barriers to photography these days. Technology is advancing rapidly and prices falling at equal speed. For a couple of grand you can get yourself a quality camera and lens and off you go. Some of the old-schoolers may be annoyed by this. They had to do it the hard way.

Good luck to everyone :D

Not as long as your customers are happy.

They're the ones who put money in your pocket. Not other photographers who resent you getting a slice of the pie.

That's what free enterprise is all about.

Photography is a business with one of the smallest start up costs I can think of,... that you can run out of the back of your car, with absolutely minimal overhead costs.
That's why so many amateurs try and make the transition to pro.

There are times that I wonder... Are people complaining about the increasing numbers of bad photographers/competition, or just the increasing numbers of photographers/competition?

The second one I'd think - The first just the excuse to complain about it !! I wonder how many photogs shot their first shot with a L lens and high end body. Seriously !! Photography business is a business - if the clients are happy with the product and I can make regular income from it, I'll take pictures with a P&S if that's all I have. You've got to grow the equipment with the business not the other way around.

It's great!
Power to the people!
They only annoy me when they start obsessing about "is this lense sharp?"
