All,

I have been in the dilema of wanting to upgrade my camera lens from the Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 zoom lens to something ....... shall we say, better quality :-D .... and I was interested in getting a better IQ at the top end of the range .... step forward the 70-200L F4 IS .... however as I don't have money dripping off trees I was keen to try and get something a little cheaper .... step forward the Canon 70-300IS (Half the price!). However after doing some comparison shots I found that the 70-300IS produced darker more contrasty images that I did not like and also found that the IS did not perform as well as the 70-200L F4 IS lens .... so try as I might I couldn't convince myself to go for the cheaper lens and have now bought the 70-200L F4 IS.
However I thought I'd show the images here in case they are of use to anyone else having a similar dilema.
The first is the 70-200 the 2nd is the 70-300 .... you can see how the image looks darker on the tree and the burger van.

Somehow I did not think anyone really needed to test an 18-200 vs a 70-200.

ha ha, well, granted it's a rare event but you never know, afterall i wanted to see the comparison as i was thinking of upgrading the lens. But i did this mainly to show what i'd found in the comparison of the 70-200L F4 IS and the 70-300 IS. I just wanted to give something back to the forum that has been helpful to me.

This is what happens when you use a Canon 70-300mm IS USM lens to take pictures of things that move:

Sometimes, you can learn more about a lens by using it to capture subjects that move, than to point it at things that stand still.
