I bought my 28-135mm lens for my Canon A2 film camera back in Feb. 1998. Recently, it started giving me error 01 messages. I cleaned contacts on both the lens and on my current camera, Canon 40D. I finally got around to getting it repaired. I could not get the repair info online, because of the age of the lens, so I had to phone Canon. The Rep. told me to send my lens to the Canon Factory Service Center in Newport News, VA. I did not even know they had a service center in VA. Anyway, I sent it UPS last Monday 08 Nov. at 3:30pm, Canon personnel signed for the package at 7:00am Tuesday morning, by 10am Tuesday they had emailed an estimate to me for approval. I gave them the go ahead on the work. They had completed the repair by Wed. 10 Nov., shipped it back to me and I received it today, Fri. 12 Nov.
Is that fantastic service, or what? They said on the repair invoice that the lens assembly was not operating properly and was giving me the err01 message, so they replaced the lens assembly, totally checked out everything in the lens and cleaned it. For this they charged me $82.00 + the return shipping. I am a very happy customer. The repair is guaranteed for 6 months, too.

I certainly think that spending $100.00 to repair a lens that I paid close to $600.00 for in 1998, when I purchased it from B&H Photo, is a good investment.
Your kind of thinking is what is wrong with our country now. We have become a throw-away society.

BTW, the whole point of my email was not about my specific lens. It was about the exceptional service that Canon provided.

Glad you had a great experience Canon, Ruth. But I don' think that is in any way what is wrong with our country. ;)
