Hi,
I'm looking for a 14 inch lightweight laptop. My budget is $1000 tops.

I currently have an HP Dv4 which I loved (old) but it's a little bit bulky. I'm thinking Toshiba beacause those always seemed light to me but I don't seem to find one that fits the bill (maybe I haven't searched enough). I'm open to any brand.

Anybody have any ideas?

The first one off the top of my head is the Asus U45JC (external link)

I've a friend who has this laptop, and he absolutely loves it. He gets 8 hours of battery life on this thing, and says it's very light compared to his old laptop as well.

What do you consider lightweight? The Asus mentioned above is still almost 5lb's with power adapter. That's almost as heavy as mid-sized laptops. The MacBook Air 13" is under 3lbs with power and the Toshiba Portege R705-P35 is around 3.5lbs. For extreme portability with good power it's the Air, but if you're not thinking Apple, I would highly recommend the Toshiba. If 13" is too small, then the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4050 would probably be a good bet - but it's a beast at 6+lbs. Windows laptops are not what you would usually call 'light weight'. To get prices down they often will use less expensive materials that weigh more.

Thanks,

r31, That's a good recommendation. I guees it's top of the list, for now. The reviews in general are not stellar but I find laptop reviews to be very subjective, always.

MaxxuM, The Air has no cd drive, and I'd like one. And all Apple laptops are superheavy (except the air) The Toshiba Portege R705-P35 is very close to what I'm looking for, too bad it's only 13 inches. Illl try to find one instore and decide if it's big enough for me. M645-S4050 sounded amazing until I saw the weight.

Oh boy, I'll have to decide between bigger screen but somewhat heavy, and smaller screen but better weight.

I think that most of the 14" laptops that come equipped with an optical drive are going to be pushing 5 pounds.

HP envy starts at 5.25 lb
The ASUS U45Jc-A1 is 4.7 lbs

More thna 10% of total weight!

Thats a half a pound difference. 4.7 or less is about the weight I want.
