i sold my 7D/24-70mm set a while back almost a year now, and have been rolling with my backup 20D for the time being. so i made my splurge and went FF like i have wanted to go for a long time now.

so i bought the 5DMKII with the 24-70mmL.

i think i am having soft issues with this lens, even stopped down to 5.6 or f11...

i have some sample raw files i am going to share so i can get some advice if it is me or the lens... i am not used to the 5D yet i don't know if i am seeing softness due to the larger sensor ? maybe?

i set the camera up on a tripod and used a remote trigger to take these pictures...

here is a "sample" of my focus point.

while looking at the RAW files i have included here, also notice the border of the card itself, looks like it has a glow around its edge??

i need to know something soon so i can get my RMA started.

thanks for the help,
Aaron

Picture detail and sharpness looks awesome. I would not worry.

As for the purple fringing...it happens with a lot (if not all) lenses. Some show it more than others. Go check out the 85mm f/1.2, or the 50mm f/1.4. They both have it bad wide open. So, do not worry about that either. It it normal.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

Your monitor must be soft.

Congrats on your purchase and enjoy, it actually looks fine. You chose a subject with stark borders and contrast, which will maximize your ability to see PF.

thanks for the comments, maybe i should have taken the samples at the wide side "24mm" instead of 70... i will say the results are a lot better on the zoom side than the wide angle.

like i said, i am new to the FF, and it may be me just needing to get used to the differnce in view, i have always had a crop and the 24-70mmL...

here is the 24mm 100% crop view of the card.

and here is a link to the complete RAW file for this.

i am going out today and taking more photo's and will post back some of the results...

I agree with the previous 2 posters. The shots look fine to me. I did a rough and ready replication of your test (except my Joker was in colour) using my 24-105 @ f4 and got pretty much the same result. There is no problem with your kit IMHO.

I took a look at your 24mm RAW file. I think your camera/lens combo is fine and there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

One thing to note though is that the card picture was a very heavy crop of the original image. The card probably, in my estimate, took up 10% of the picture meaning that you only placed 10% of the megapixels on the crop and displaying that here. Pixel peeping at this level is not going to show the merits of this camera/lens combo. If you wanted to really show the clarity/sharpness, get up really close to the card and fill the frame. I would bet that the card will be so sharp, that it would cut you.

the re-sized images do no justice for this camera / lens...

but anyways i am going to share my first outing with my 5DMKII...

all things aside, getting out of my house with the camera was the best thing i could do... i am 100% about IQ and that is top priority for me. this camera and the lens is right on as you guys have already mentioned. i am very pleased with the results. now i just need to get more experience using the camera properly. i don't consider myself professional at all, just a hobbyist with a passion to learn and enjoy capturing "the moment"...

thanks for all your help and keep your eyes peeled for more to come on the forums.
