There are 2 ways to edit images in DPP :

  1. the edit window
  2. the edit image window

As there is no possibility to have the tool palette docked in edit window, I never use this edit window. I use always the edit image window. So I was wondering if there is any benefit when using the edit window ?

Do you use the edit window ? if yes why ?

PS: I know it is also possible to edit from the main window but as you see only thumbnails it is hard to do serious work there.

The main advantage I see is that in the single edit window you can toggle the toolbar to close/open (Ctl-T). That way you can fill the screen with the image when you want to.

The "integrated" view (Ctl-Right Arrow) is nice because with the docking toolbar you can view the whole image without it being blocked by the toolbar. also you have the filmstrip so you can work on multiple selected images.

The above being said there are also a few options in the "docked" design -- turning the filmstrip on and off and moving the tool palette from one side to another. I'd have to play more with it to get all the options -- for example I see that you can turn off the tools as well as the filmstrip and the upper toolbar to get the same view as you can in the undocked window, so I guess it's all just a question of which you prefer -- I'd say for multiple selected files the docked version could be preferred

Well, after playing a little with the edit window, I have found only one thing that you can do there and can not do in the edit image window.
You can open several images simultaneously with the edit window and then go to the menu of the main window and choose "Window", "Arrange horizontally" or "Arrange vertically" which allows to have all the pics simultaneously on the screen and so compare them. However I don't know if this is very useful as the quick check tool seems to be better for this task.

Yeah, the edit window does have some nice things, though -- the Up/Down keyboard shortcuts for moving from image to image are nice.

Hmm, I just tried that and couldn't get it to work for me -- with three images selected, I Ctl-O to open the single edit window, and try Ctl-Up and Ctl-Down to change images and nothing happens. Is that documented? Honestly, I typically just mess with this stuff when it comes up, like in this thread, and so am figuring things out as I go.

These shortcuts work in the edit image window, not the edit window.
By the way, CTRL-O opens the edit window and CTRL+--> opens the edit image window. Are you on mac or pc ?

OK, then we are seeing the same thing. Ctl--> opens the edit image window and (with multiple images seleced) you can move from image to image with the up and down arrows -- now for me Ctl did nothing to change the behavior, so Ctl-Up/Down behaves the same as just Up and down -- check it out and see how that works with your setup.

And, that's the chief advantage I was referring to to using the edit image window over the edit window (Ctl-O) -- the ability to select multiple images and get to them both ways as well as the use of the integrated interface, of course.

I'm using a PC, a laptop with Win7 64. Of cours with a Mac, it's hard to say what kinds of subtle differences may be lurking:)!

Ah I found it...
If when you open the edit image window, the thmbnails are not visible, then you can not use just up/down but ctrl+ up/down
However if when you open the edit image window, the thmbnails are visible, then up/down works...

Also you were talking about the edit window in your first message, not the edit image window, that's why I thought you were talking about the edit window ;-)a

BTW the names of both windows are very similar...

Well then!

And yeah, we gotta distinguish between the two, which I got 'cause when you right-click you get the two different names -- but at least it's easy to do either Ctl-> or Ctl-O!

DPP is interesting, because it does have a lot of little things going on in there.
