Took a side trip to the local Wildlife Refuge on the way to work this morning. The Elk were pretty active today! I wish he were a bit closer, but I'm just happy he stayed within reasonable range while I walked (w/walker) up to the fence to get the shot!

If that is the one by Los Banos, then I think I shot a photo of the same elk from the same fence last winter. Pretty animals.

Hi Mike.... where is that refuge? I live in Visalia and would LOVE to make a trip out there soon. This picture is great... love the elk.....

And then the Merced National Wildlife Refuge is a little ways east of there (toward Merced) and that is where you go for Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes in the winter.

Bob's right, that is the San Luis NWR. I've had better luck seeing them closer in the morning when it's cooler out. Merced NWR is also worth a visit for the waterfowl, but only in the early season...it's all dry grass now.
