Hi, (hope this isn't in the wrong forum)

Just returned from the local Fry's here in Vegas,
not one Canon DSLR to be found on the shelves.
There's a sign for 1 open box 7D but that was it.

Asked the sales clerk, she said they no longer carried Canon!

Is this true for the entire chain? Just the physical stores?
or is it just us here in Vegas?

thanks!

My local Frys still carries Canons, I am considering buying a T2i for my daughter. That is if they are still carrying them when I visit them next.

The sales clerk may want to check the Fry's web site, (external link) which lists several Canon DSLR's and compact point-and-shoot cameras. (external link)

Why would you buy a DSLR from Fry's instead of B&H or Adorama anyway?

I'm a technerd...
I enjoy just looking at all the hardware at Frys.
Since they also (until recently) sold Canon DSLRs, I would often drop by and see
what they had to offer.

An acquaintance of mine got a really good deal on an open box return, so I was
hoping that there might be a gem there...

The Fry's in Dallas/Irving on 635 still has Canon, but not a full line on display and they have a lot of empty display space on their camera area. They may just be waiting for Christmas inventory to arrive or may be cutting back.

Meh, the store I work at still has Canon on the site, but we don't carry Canon in the stores (mostly).

Canon has been on a tear of cutting off retailers who went through bankruptcy/reoganization and still owe money; Canon wants the full amount they were owed, not the amount a judge said they would get. It sucks for the little guys, but I can see why Canon would do that.

Because not all people are only interested in the absolute lowest price. There are also those who don't want to send their dollars to other states in these hard economic times and would rather keep their money within their local economies and best they can.

You also cannot test a camera before taking it home when you buy from another state off the internet. I could bet that Best Buy sells more dSLRs than B&H & Adorama combined!. B&H & Adorama have the internet and one store but Best Buy has 100s if not 1000s of stores!

If the difference were small, I'd buy locally. But when we're talking hundreds of dollars on a DSLR body or L lens, I'm going for price every time. Let Best Buy make money off people who just walk in and buy whatever the salesman pitches.

Our local Fry's had a bunch of empty spaces where the dlrs used to be and a brand new display case. It wasn't canon, so I didn't pay much attention to it..I think it was Sony. They had a ton of stuff in it though.

Ritz doesn't have Canon either and they also filed for reorganization. And yeah, Canon is in the right on this one.

Ok,
maybe my search skills are lacking,
I could find no definitive answer as to whether or not Frys filed for bankruptcy,
or re-organization...

have they done so?

Oh well, Fry's was close to work, and home, guess I'll have to travel farther
to gaze longingly on the cameras on my wish list...

We could argue that for a while. I don't think you're necessarily wrong, but cutting off the specialty retailers that are making an effort to pay at least some of it back just seems like bad business to me.

All we can really hope for is the economy to really turn around, and have the specialty retailers get back on to Canon's good - or even "OK" side - at least.
