Hi all
Ive just bought a new telescopic lens for the Canon digital slr 1000D and have been having some issues.

1) The lens is a Samyang 650 - 1300mm as in the photo I hope Ive managed to attach?

The thing with it is that it says it works from F8 up to F16... so when I go to set the F settting on the camera it automatically resets itself to F00... how do I get the F setting to stay at the required setting?

Ive set it using another lens then changed lens and it reverts to the F00 setting... nothing seems to make it stay put at F8 or whatever... I set the small button on the right to the correct setting but I think I might be missing something a button to lock it in place or some such?

Each step along the lens (as you extend it has the distance and then an F setting but none will remain on that setting only reverting back to the F00 setting.

2) the scene is not clear but rather washed out... could this be due to the F issue?

The distance this thing can get is AMAZING and with the 2x converter attached its nothing short of incredible... but I cant seem to get it to remain on the F setting required for each distance

Thanks for any help!!
Shane

Oh here are a couple of photos that Im getting...

The first as you can see is pretty washed out it was on the P setting with F00 as the F setting
The second is on the AV setting again with the F00 as the F setting... I simply cannot get the F setting to change and remain changed to the required F8 - F16 or anywhere inbetween it just reverts to the F00 setting.

The second picture with the AV setting is quite washed out compared to the actual scene...

I will try to upload a couple of others I took... one using the new lens the other with another lens that came with the camera
Any help will be appreciated!!
Shane

I don't think the camera can control the aperture on the lens as it doesn't have the electronics in the lens to communicate with the camera body, its a fixed apeture lens which is f8 at 650mm and f16 at 1300mm and you won't be able to control this.

If you shoot in manual mode you will be able to control the shutter and iso, the apeture will be fixed by the focal length you have selected.

An awesome focal length but not particularly practical and I wonder what you'll use the lens for in the long-term.

So much to say here but the bottom line is " you get what you pay for " not saying that you cant have fun with it , lots of alarms should of gone off when you see a 1300mm Lens going for just over 200.00

As said before it had fixed Aperture that you cant change again " you get what you pay for " hence the f00 also IQ is not going to be great on this Lens even with my 1000.00 Sigma 150-500mm a 2X converter degrades IQ so I would not suggest using a TC at all .

Again have fun as I did for a little while with my 500mm Mirror Lens ( Now a paper weight )

Just my 2ยข

The aperture is fixed. Additionally the lens wont communicate to the camera what aperture it is at either, so the camera just shows F/00. Ignore the aperture, nothing you can do about it.

It'll probably be quite soft etc but maybe fun to play with. Your first image is over-exposed to start with, leave the camera on Av mode and dial the exposure compensation back to expose it correctly, or alternatively just shoot in manual mode. Post your results, fun to look at none the less.

The aperture is probably focal length dependent. You may have to use manual mode to get proper exposure.

The f00 is because the camera doesn't get any information from the lens.

What setting are you using? - try setting the camera to Av. Then the camera will adjust the shutter speed to get the correct exposure.

What ISO are you setting? - the images look overexposed, as if the camera cannot set a high enough shutter speed.
Try dropping the ISO.

Very much a trial and error to get the best results with this set-up.

Crank up the ISO; use M or TV (since aperture is uncontrollable); try to have fun.

At 650mm it is f/8

At 1300mm it is f/16

You cannot lower that number nor increase it.

Probably best to play with it in Aperture Priority as the aperture is fixed.

The reason you get F00 is because there is no communication between that lens and the body.

My guess is that it is a T-Mount lens and has a T-Mount adapter supplied with it.

M would work

TV ( shutter priority ) mode would attempt to change the aperture, which cannot be changed.

Av mode would be best .... Aperture is set, camera adjusts shutter, user adjusts ISO.

I have had 'fair luck' with a 500mm T-Mount mirrored lens in (M) mode using Live View magnified x10 to focus.

What was I thinking? You are of course correct.

my friend, that is Mirror lens..
It is fixed aperture lens.. you get f8 at 650mm , something in between, and finally f16 at 1300mm

it worked fine, and you manage to pull some awesome shots.. so dont worry about it.. While you are at it, try photograph moon..

That's no mirror lens, it'd be about half the length if it was.

And since I live in Broome in the Kimberley of Western Australia one must post a gratuitous sunset shot!!!

I bought the lens after realizing that as a shore bound bloke the camera and lens I had could not reach out and touch the whales that moved danced and breached just offshore north of here where I camp every weekend.. I NEEDED something that could reach them!! Hence taking an option and buying this my first telephoto lens... it wasnt as cheep as someone up above stated but then not that dear either just an entry level telephoto lens.

Im pretty chuffed with it so far... since getting your help and mucking about a fair bit with it myself.

Thanks!!!
Shane
