I am considering upgrading my EOS 400D but am not sure whether it would be worthwhile going for, say, a 500D or 550D both of which would just about be within my limited budget. I would probably only need to go for a body as I already have the Canon 18-55 and 55-250 lenses in my outfit.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you considered upgrading your lenses instead? A good lens makes much bigger difference in terms of IQ than a camera body. T1i & T2i have very nice screen and video feature, but if you are going to use your old lenses, you won't notice much improvements in your shots.

Im in a similar position as your (upgrading from 400d) but considering my lenses are reasonable Im going to go for a new body.

Maybe if you upgrade your lenses you will get even more out of your 400D. This is all depending on your reason for upgrading of course, mine is mainly for the ISO performance

In what ways is your 400D limiting your output?

I don't think the T1i would do much for you, it would be very similar to the 400D.

The T2i seems to be (along with the 7D and 60D) the first big step forward in low noise among Canon's APS-C bodies in a long time (since the 10D, really). That might be worth getting.

OTOH, do you have a speedlight? If not, that might be money better spent.

Also, both of your lenses are very slow. Depending on what you shoot, either adding some fast primes at certain lengths or trading your 18-55 for a faster zoom in the same basic range might be a better idea.

The best thing to do depends on what you are shooting and why you are wanting an upgrade in the first place. What specifically are you hoping to get from the new body?
