Normally I'm thrilled when guests pull me aside to do a few photos of them or their family when I'm shooting a wedding, it saves me the trouble of approaching them. But today I'm editing the shots from a wedding, and there's one guest in them that really kind of treated us like portrait photographers for herself rather than the bride.

Between my camera and my partners camera there's about fifteen or sixteen portraits of her, her kids, her and her kids, her and her father, her and her sister, her and her husband, her and her whole family, her kids and their cousins.

It's a little extreme.

This is my camera, there are many like it, but this one is mine.

Dont give the bride and groom those pictures, and market to her on high print sales?

(Im being somewhat sarcastic)

That's actually decent advice, I felt including that many shoots of someone who wasn't in the immediate family and wasn't in the wedding party was ... unnecessary, but I also didn't want to ignore them, since they were requested and she was going to be looking for them.

I hadn't run into the issue before, and hadn't managed to do more than look at them in annoyance so far. I think I will set them up in a gallery with only watermarked-web sized prints.

If i'm not busy i'll happily take those photos, though I would reiterate to the B&G that the images are for their personal use, and that they may not share the digital files. I do tell people they're welcome to make prints for whoever they like though.

If there were too many requests, or they were at an inappropriate time, i'd just politely say i'm a little busy right now, please ask me again when things are a bit quieter.

They were at appropriate times, she was very nice, she asked before hand, at the rehearsal if we would mind doing a family portrait the next day, and we were happy to, but by the end of the recpetion I was starting to sigh a bit when she'd come up to me.

Part of the process I guess, although it'd probably be a different story if I had been shooting by myself.

I've had to put my foot down a bit before in the past and the guests end up being a bit offended, but I've always put my best self forward well with the people paying me (usually the B&G and immediate family) so it usually gets laughed off or even apologized for after the fact. There are always limits.

Include 1 or 2 of those for the bride - and if the guest sees them, she might ask to see the rest...
then you upsell

"Hey, did you pick up one of our cards on that table over there? It has all the information on it on how to find these photos on our website. Make sure you get one before you leave, the photos are great, see!"

Then swing your camera around and show them one of the photos.

I need to start bringing enough cards to set up somewhere discrete, right now we carry enough to hand out to those who ask, but it'd be a lot more convenient to just say, you can pick one up over by the bar, rather than digging into our bag for some.

Thanks for the advice on how to handle it, without overwhelming the bride with those photos.

Sounds like an opportunity to me. A family that likes to get their portrait taken.

"This is just scratching the surface of what we can do in the studio. How about an appointment for Wednesday?"
