I noticed that one had an extra mark at the end of the bill is this the male?

Yes the male Northern Flicker has a black mustache stripe. Beautiful shots

It actually depends on which sub-species Northern Flicker you have - they come in two "flavours". Being from northern Ontario I am used to seeing the resident "Yellow-shafted" variety seen in the photos here (common to the east / taiga). As one moves west one starts to see the "Red-shafted" variety. A Yellow-shafted male has a black malar (and a red nape crescent). A Red-Shafted male has a red malar (and no nape crescent).
