getting noise in sound on 7d

i went through to test and try to figure out what is going on but on a recent shoot i did for a friend i got a bad hissing noise in my video. i used studio condenser mics on poles to capture sound, and the sound is good but there is a loud hissing noise in the background. this was shot in doors. i did a room tone and the noise was still there, also tried 2 other microphones and it is still there. I broke down and tried a cheap desktop mic on my camera and the noise was there but not a loud, and lastly tried of course no mic just on camera mic and still had the sound. the part that bugs me is that for this shoot the mics were not close to the camera. i also tested this in another room of the house where the shoot was and in my bedroom and the noise was still there. any idea on what my problem might be as well as how to remove this noise from the video. i am not very experienced working with sound. thanks

were you running the sound straight into the camera?

yes i was

still having trouble with this as well as if its possible to minimize or remove the sound noise from existing takes that have already been recorded

Which lens were you using? If the 28-135, did you have IS turned on? If so, the camera will pickup noise from the IS as it's running.

If you are hearing a constant background hiss, then it's the crappy audio preamps in the camera. Audio sucks in the 5D, too, but not as much because you can manually adjust the input level down and use an external preamp like the Juicedlink boxes. Even then it will be a tad bit noisy. For best results just record your audio off camera and sync it up in post.

it has nothing to do with your technique. merely that the camera's audio interface is subpar.

how do you guys feel about that zoom recorder for recording and syncing later? i saw a few people that use them for low budget stuff

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Zoom h4n kit along with an Audio-Technica AT897 shotgun mic. The ZOom h2 looks flimsy and has no XLR input.

I use the H4N for all my audio stuff and love it!!

yes, syncing can be a pain, but it is worth it for the audio quality you can get.

the only thing I have been a little annoyed with is the battery life.... be sure to get at least two sets of rechargable AA batteries when you get it.

It's the AGC software on the camera that's making the hissing noise. Unfortunately there's no way to turn it off in the camera. On the 5D you can't turn it off either, but Magic Lantern firmware update allows it to be shut off. As ML is in the works and isn't due to be out for a bit, you're stuck. There is a cheap work around I saw in a video on C5D awhile ago... I'll see if I can dig it up.

What's cool about the hack is that you can still run audio straight into the camera with no need for post sync since it's such a PITA.

Actually, current firmware for the 5D allows you to disable AGC and set levels manually. You'll get better results by keeping the 5D level at half or less, but you'll need a clean and hot level to feed it, and you will still get hissing in situations with dead air. The audio preamps on all the Canons (and probably nearly all DSLRS that have video) are crappy and noisy.

You're going to have to record your audio separately if you want quality.
