I recently found out two things regarding my pictures. First, a year ago I went to a Civil War battlefield with a friend who's writing a book about it, he wanted me to take some pictures for him. He showed his publisher and said the guy was really impressed, they decided to include most of my shots in the book (and a magazine article that's also being written about it). Cool!!!

Then, a little while ago the store where I have my pictures printed asked if they could use one of my recent butterfly pictures to blow up to their poster sizes (20x30 down to 11x14) to get people's attention, for advertisement. I went in the other day and sure enough, my butterfly is up, cool x2!!

I still can't believe it (as I don't see any of my pictures as being particularly good), but thought it was worth sharing. So now, when can I expect my mountains of money to start rolling in?!

Congrats....... you would think that if they wanted your photos for a book/magazine there would be a monetary offer. Maybe you should bring it up... I wouldn't give my photos away for free.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Congrats, Cobra!

And Maureen is right. There should be some mutual consideration in both cases. And not just some token gesture, like a free copy of the book or 20 x 30 poster. If your pictures have commercial value to someone, they need to share the wealth.

My prices and conditions of use have depended on the person/group/organization, and type and frequency of use. I have not sold any images outright (guess I'm not in that league) instead I provide clients with a "right to use under specific conditions" for a fee. Most of my images are technical and end up being used for non-profit educational purposes for no cost but I still always stipulate clearly about how (and how many times) my images can be used, and always request a final copy of the book or magazine to check they do it as specified. I have been caught out a few times where my images have been used in a manner not in accordance with original agreement. I even managed to get a some dollars once from a real estate magazine who wanted to use some of my small panoramas. Although they never used the images I still got paid.

Thanks all, I appreciate it. As to the posters in the store I have already received a free 20x30, as well as a 16x20. Plus I was told if anyone asks about the origin of the pictures my information will be given. My friend already told me I surely would be getting compensated with the book, and I imagine that'll depend on how many are sold. Haven't really discussed it much at all, but I will.
Thanks again!

It is always nice to be paid, however you can say I've been published in XYZ book, cannot hurt in the self-promotion department. Everyone has to start somewhere and you have your foot in the door now.
