Hi folks,

My house was broken into last Friday (12 November) and the following was taken, not sure if you guys can help track it down, but just wanted to let you know about the gear that was taken :(

There was a lot more taken, jewellery etc. My mum died two weeks ago suddenly and the scrotes took her jewellery too.

I'm form West Lothian, Scotland, UK and the following camera gear was taken:

Sony HDR-SR11E camcorder, can't tell which of these is the serial:

P-02041960
s01-0511929-D
POS Barcode – 4 905524488456

Cameras

Canon 7D – serial number 1080700737
Canon 40D – serial number 0430102491

Lenses

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II – serial number 35332191
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L USM IS – serial number 00496194 (this lens had a hoya UV filter on it)
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM – serial number 52501194 (this lens had a hoya or jessops UV filter on it)
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5/5.6 L USM IS – serial number unknown as of yet. Canon did a cashback scheme and I sent the barcode with serial number to them. Am in the middle of tracking this down from the receipt.

Accessories

Canon Speedlite 430EX flash
Canon BG-E2N battery grip – this was attached to the bottom of the Canon 40D camera, there were two batteries in it, one Canon and one unbranded.
Canon BG-E7 battery grip – this was attached to the bottom of the Canon 7D camera, there were two batteries in it, one Canon and one Hahnel.

Tracking the serial numbers down from the above from the receipts, no serials on boxes.

Accessories - continued

Hahnel HW 433 C80 Wireless Release (remote control for camera, I had broken the switch on the remote control and it was superglued so it couldn't move)
Cokin filter holder, and adapter rings
Cokin filters – Circular polariser, this was in a holder box, the box was broken.
Cokin sunlight, soft and a couple of other filters. These filters were in one filter holder box, the box had slots to hold multiple filters.
2 x 8gb Sankisk Extreme memory cards – these were in each of the cameras
1 x 4gb Sandisk Extreme memory card (these were in a transparent plastic blue memory card holder)
1 x 2gb Jessops memory card (these were in the transparent plastic blue memory card holder)
2 x 1gb Jessops memory card (these were in the transparent plastic blue memory card holder)

As I said, any help on keeping an eye on the usual places for selling stuff would be really appreciated.

Neil.

Sorry to hear, that's terrible. Especially about your mother and the jewelery.

Make sure you report to the police in case it pops up at local pawn shop, the bigger chains should have a connection with police and serial numbers I would suspect.

No insurance? I think you should report it all stolen the appropriate way and then for the most part try and forget about it - you've obviously got other emotional challenges, ultimately camera gear is just objects and over the course of your life not all that valuable. If it turns up, bonus, otherwise don't think about it too much. Take the opportunity to grab a cheap camera for now and enjoy the simplicity of it.

Hope it all works out.

Thanks phreeky.

Yeah, I have insurance, but want my gear back :( It was reported as I interrupted the break-in, the police were at my house within 4 minutes. I had my 1 year old son with my when I entered the house, which made me turn around and get back in the car. If he wasn't there I certainly wouldn't have left the house with these scrotes in it.

Got a loan of a camera already, phew :)

Not sure what there is to advise or help on. If you called the police and filed the report already then great job. File a claim and collect your check. It seems like you have done what needs to be done.

Good luck.

Canon UK have a service whereby you can call them (at 5p per minute) and give them the serial numbers. Then, if any of the products goes in for service, or is registered with CPS, they can direct the police to the new owner. Details are here (external link).

That's the best advice I can give, hope the scrotes are caught.

Oh that's bad :(

I hope the buggers are caught and you can get your stuff back.

Maybe keep an eye on ebay too perhaps to see if your gear turns up there?

Sorry to hear about it - especially the timing.

Hopefully you will get your gear either recovered or replaced in full but that wont make you feel better at the moment (if you have new for old you will get your 40D and 70-200 upgraded or at least the cost of the new versions).

You have reminded me to spend 30 mins photographing my gear and noting down the serial numbers just in case.

Good tip!

Did you put your name in the camera? I wonder if you could use Google Image search to look for images taken with them after a while? Otherwise, the only thing you can do before the fact is to have full replacement insurance to avoid getting screwed twice.

Neil,, I feel for you.. It happened to us last June while we were asleep upstairs..

Laptop, G10, Ipod, two mobile phones and about 150USD in money was taken..

Funnily my camera gear survived.. My camera bag containing my 50D, 20D, lenses and other stuff was searched.. My 20 ended up on the bed in the study where I keep my gear..
