The cooler winter weather is beginning to push ducks down towards Texas. Our little lake is filling up with mallards and wigeons as well as a few other types of ducks. I was shooting great egrets and great blue herons yesterday afternoon and as I was walking back to the house, the ducks began flocking in for the night. I just had to remove the lens cap for a few more parting shots .. and I am glad that I did. But ... I did keep my hat on as they were flying directly overhead.

Thanks, Kenn. I am living proof that even in the "wrong" hands, the 7D is a great birding camera. :)

Nice Bill! I've made more mallard shots than I'd like to admit and am yet to get a good one is flight.

Thanks for the comment, Lil. I also hate to admit it, but frequently when I do not find anything else to photograph, the mallards are always willing subjects. Occasionally, there is a nice one in the batch. Of all of the hundred of mallard shots, I probably only have about a dozen of them in flight -- but this is the only one worth showing. The late afternoon light was just at the right angle to show the underside of the wing feathers.

You know Bill, I was reading through your original post here again. Maybe I should try a wearing a hat next time attempting to make mallard in flight shots. ;)
