My wife has (and loves) a Canon SD800. This was one of the first powershots with wide angle and IS. It has 640x480 video mode, 7MP, 3.8x optical (28-105 equiv). She also has a waterproof case for it (specific to that model), but does not use it that often.

I was thinking of getting her a S95 for Christmas. Is it a worthwhile upgrade?

What I see as upgrades:
-HD Video Capability
-Better Image Quality
-High ISO
-high-res LCD

Anything else?

If she doesn't need to shoot in RAW, you might look at one of the new ultrazooms from Canon such as the SX210 IS. That is one sweet camera and the ultrazoom might be a total winner for her.

Is she dissatisfied with anything about the SD800? Wanting to do anything the S95 will do that the SD800 won't? If she loves the SD800, why not get her some bling instead? I know I'd like to upgrade my wife's SD600, just so I wouldn't need to worry about having some SD (not SDHC) cards around for it. But she wouldn't appreciate that in the least.

I doubt she even knows what RAW is (even though I have explained it to her in the context of my 7D).

How is the image quality step up and f/2.0 advantage?

She likes the small size, so I don't know if she will take well to a superzoom.

Check out the size of the superzoom SX 210 IS. It's not that much bigger than the S95!!

I'd imagine the back screen on any of the new cameras might be enough for her to enjoy an upgrade.

Let's not forget the SD800 has an optical viewfinder - a vanishing breed these days. Does she use that? If she does, going to something she'll have to hold at arms length won't turn her on.

I agree that if she has no complaints about the SD800,
then it could be more your wanting to get her a camera than her wanting to upgrade.
I don't mean to be rude, but I bought my wife the S90 and realized soon enough that it was more for me (to complement my 40D) than for her.

I think you are right on the money.

;)

That, of course, doesn't mean you shouldn't get it...

I just did this exact upgrade. I couldn't stand the lack of functions even with firmware hacks.

The screen was awful and noise was really getting on my nerves. I was desperate for decent video as well. For only $300 bucks, a good upgrade. I will definitely miss wide-angle, especially on vacation. As for the viewfinder, completely useless.

Doesn't the S95 have the same wide lens (28mm eqiuv?)

For some reason I thought SD800 was 24mm equiv. but I believe you are right.
