I have a friend that is getting into photography. She has played with my gear alot and still kind of new to using the camera itself.

I don't know what to suggest! I would say a 40d used would be great but I'm not sure if a warranty on a new item would be better. Say a t2i or 60d? I just don't know bout the plastic and feel of the rebel bodies. Especially since she will be carrying it around in her backpack.

The video is a bonus on the newer rebel bodies though.
I would think she wants somewhat decent low light performance since she will be shooting concerts and such too. (she's a musician)

I keep saying is 5dmkii but she doesn't have the cash to shell :)

Tell her to go with the 7D, it has everything she needs now and also later on she won't have to upgrade for some time. Even with kit lens it won't break the bank.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I like to suggest a Rebel series with some decent glass to beginners. The T2i+17-50 f/2.8 would be a great starter kit.

How big are her hands? Most women (aren't as oafy as us blokes) prefer something that's smaller, more compact to hold. So a rebel body might be more appropriate. T2i might fit the bill (video + smaller body + decent IQ).

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to be sexist. I believe women don't care much (if at all) about the "heft" of camera equipment. A camera is not an "accessory" for them to go with their outfit. It's a tool to get the image and women are a bit more pragmatic about such things. Hence something that's comfortable to hold, but yielding great results is what they're after (generally speaking). Whereas guys are more gear-driven (more times than not) and wouldn't be caught dead bringing a Rebel body to a professional shoot. More likely to justify the equipment than to admit it's the nut behind the camera that makes the shot. ;)

I'll probably get flamed for calling us guys out but it's the truth. *dawns flame suit*

But back to the original topic... I would recommend to your friend the T2i, or maybe the 60D to start. If/when she grows out of it... she'll know. But have her go to a store to "feel" them out first to see which one is more comfortable and practical for her hands.

The 60D is actually smaller than the 50d, and lighter. But still a bit larger than the t2i.

t2i, basically the same image quality (external link) as a 60d or 7d
spend the rest on glass or accessories like a good flash

i suggest to get Canon 60D.

+1 60d, same positive handling as the 7d in a slightly smaller body, with a good balance of features.

What's her total budget? The T2i kit is a great place to start but if her budget is $700 she needs a different plan.

If she's going to be shooting at concerts and also take it backpacking, she'll need two lenses and she might want a faster lens than the 55-250. So that's more expense.
