Need book suggestions

First of all, sorry if this is the wrong board to post this in. I'm just starting out as my username shows. I just purchased a Powershot G1. I've been playing around with it and learned some basic things. I want to learn more about topics such as shutter speed, appature, etc. and how they affect the pictures I take. I also want to get assignment/practice ideas. Can anyone suggest some good books on the aforementioned topics?

A must for all halfway serious or serious photographers is National Geographic Photography Field Guide by Burian & Caputo.

It is available directly from National G or Amazon, Barnes & Noble, B&H etc.

It starts with the verrry basics and goes to the verrry technical. What makes this very enjoyable reading are the latter portions of the book that that give many "how to tips & tricks" by National G staff photographers.

It also deals with the how tos of many unique/difficult settings/light conditions.

The inside of the front and back covers are even 18% gray cards.

Besides, if you get tired of reading it you can just look at the many neat pictures.

This is the BEST I have ever read. List price $25 but more than worth it!!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion about the Nation Geographic book. I'll go order it. My order for the Short Course book on the G1 should come in soon. I can't wait to read both.

The National Geography book is very good, I still prefer John Shaw's Natural Photography Field Guide (I have both).

I agree John Shaw's book is excellent.

However, I think that the Nat G book overall addresses a broader spectrum.
