So I got this Rebel 300D for a friend on CL for $100 then free because I couldnt get it to expose shots even close to correctly unless I used flash or ISO 1600. Basically it gives me black shots otherwise. Any ideas of what to do with it?

thanks

Mike

Check to see if there's any exposure compensation dialed in. It might be tweaked/pinned at the left (-2 stops?). I don't have a Rebel but I assume that you can still dial in exposure compensation in Av/Tv modes.

Its centered for exposure. I also did a hard reset and cleared all functions.

Throw it in Manual mode and set it to ISO 1600, F1.8 1/80th a second and see what happens.

Looks like metering is shot, you most likely will only be able to use this in M mode, hopefully.

On a similar thought process... I'm curious if in "M" mode it meters correctly at all?

Could also be used as a big paperweight or small door stop if Manual mode does not work out. sorry.

I have a Cannon with me at all times. You can't take the shot if you don't have something with which to shoot.

...in the end if it's REALLY toast (and you got it for free), then it's perfect for a Canon Loyalty Program Trade-In!

When you use the flash is the picture better because the shutter speed is limited to 1/200 or because metering works for ETTL ?

Could there be dirt on the metering sensor?

Yeah, something is definitely wrong.

The way I see it, you have two options here. You either trade it in under the Canon loyalty program or you see how much it would cost to repair. Either way, you should come out ahead than if you had bought a new camera.

I wondered that too, but figured if the sensor was obstructed the system would tend to over-expose, not under-expose.

Ok it works well in M mode....funny because its for a new photographer who knows nothing so now she gets to learn in M mode which is great. I should also look into the Loyalty Program

Thanks everyone :)
