??? I don't understand that logic at all. What about a 100-400L, or bringing a 2x TC with a 70-200?

Apparently there was never intended to be a restriction on lens size. There was, however, an intention to restrict excessive amounts of camera gear for people who did not have a media pass. They are supposedly discussing this for next year.
Some of the photographers who were prevented from entering with a long lens have received personal apologies from the head of security forces at Nellis and told that it was an error on the part of the screener. The "ban" was lifted at some point in the morning but who knows how many photogs had already left in disgust?

That doesn't make sense either. Why would they care? They don't have to carry it. I'd love to know the logic behind that one...

Is there any place where there's more discussion of this, especially from attendees? FenceCheck is still down...

I've heard very low-level rumblings that ICAS* (International Council of Air Shows) is considering a program to create an "Accredited Photographers" program. Possibly in conjunction with other photographic organizations.

Too many people getting access to places they really shouldn't be simply because they maintain a blog or some such outlet. Just like an NFL sideline or Pit Road in racing, a flightline is no place to "play" photographer.

(*AFAIK, ICAS has little or no influence over military open houses...)

I'm not following what this has to do with preventing people from being in the general area with "excessive" amounts of camera gear.

Thanks for the link. I'm new to participating on that site and I forget that they have a forum as well.

Appreciate the re-direct...

I'm not cutting 100mm off for anybody... LOL. It looks like they got to the bottom of it, just a communication error <hmmm>.

One thing that always ticks me off about the security for these shows: I'm a rules follower and I check the website to find out what is acceptable and what's not. Says "no backpacks". Fine - I pack the bare minimum in a Mountainsmith lumbar pack. Then I get to security and have them tell me "no backpacks", point out to them that it has no backstraps and therefore cannot be worn as a backpack (it's small anyway!) and get passed through. Then inside the show what do I see? All kinds of people with all kinds of full-size backpacks! Sometimes seems that the people who don't know that there are any rules or think that the rules don't apply to them get away with a lot and the people who try to comply get grief.

I came both days with my gripped 5D2 with 100-400 mm lens, open, I did not bring a camera bag with no issues.

I have a vest. I haven't used it since 1996. I wonder if it still fits?

I'm sorry but vests look awful dorky!

I don't give a rats azz what they look like. I just know they're functional and help avoid confrontations with base security folks because the vest allows me to carry a ton of stuff without a bag. I can also get lenses or a flash out of vest pockets a lot quicker than when I have to take off the bag, set it down, unzip it, etc, etc, etc...
