As someone mentioned, what truly sux is the inconsistency from gate to gate and even from one security person to another.

I don't give a rats azz what they look like. I just know they're functional and help avoid confrontations with base security folks because the vest allows me to carry a ton of stuff without a bag. I can also get lenses or a flash out of vest pockets a lot quicker than when I have to take off the bag, set it down, unzip it, etc, etc, etc...

Lighten up Francis.

Strange comment cause Jay is one of the lightest, funniest guys around here normally!

Nothing strange about it. For a light funny guy he gets awful defensive about looking dorky in his vest. Guess he missed the smiley face. Let's face it: we all look like dorks when wearing a vest!

I didn't miss anything. I told you exactly what I think about wearing a vest.

Kinda hard to be defensive about something that hasn't even ever cost one brain cell of thought.

A vest is just a tool in a long line of tools and now I know where I can find another one.

I've heard very low-level rumblings that ICAS* (International Council of Air Shows) is considering a program to create an "Accredited Photographers" program. Possibly in conjunction with other photographic organizations. Too many people getting access to places they really shouldn't be simply because they maintain a blog or some such outlet.

This looks like a very important part of this thread. It would be a strange move, considering that some air shows sell passes that give photographers additional access. (external link) Just as important would be learning what led to the enforcement of a non-existent rule at Aviation Nation, and whether that shows some internal security concerns that could lead to major changes with military air demonstrations.

This is also a "talking point" of the ISAP/ICAS thing...

Oh good gravy Marie... aren't you something! Wow, in every forum there's always somebody who just has to make a point that nobody but him needed making or over-state his case and you certainly take the cake. Trust me nobody here, myself included, needed you to justify or explain wearing a freaking vest.

You took one comment that was intended as humor and just had to attempt to validate yourself and your opinions by ignoring the humor that you realized was intended and heavy handedly stating why you wear a vest. Nobody cares dude! Nobody.

Then, when it is obvious that nothing more needs be said on the subject, you come back and make silly comments about no thought and call me a tool? Get over yourself. No need to respond to something you knew was humor in such an over-the-top drama queen manner.

Holy cow, you might want to take your own advice and lighten up.

Maybe different air shows are run in different ways, but at the shows attended by this writer, potentially hazardous areas are shut down before anyone can get to them. It's not unusual to have a ramp open one moment, then closed the next when a plane starts engines. If there's a safety question, it should be addressed by the air show organizers and not the sanctioning organizations.

Of course, hanging around aircraft and race cars for a few decades may gave you a better idea of what's risky than for someone who spends most of their time around a keyboard...

I think we've gotten away from the original topic of the thread which was about the all-of-a-sudden increased restrictions at Nellis.

It's become apparent to me that there was some mis-communication among security personnel manning the gates into the airshow. I can see how this can happen because it was very prevalent at MCAS Miramar last month.

Having covered the Miramar show for the last several years, I knew just where the media parking lot was located, yet the Marines directing traffic ran me (and a number of others) around in circles before we finally got into the parking lot. None of them seemed to know where the lot was.

When I commented to one of PAO Gunnery Sergeants, he apologized and mentioned that a lot of personnel from other bases are brought in for the show and just weren't familiar with the layout.

I can see how this could happen with security personnel also. Miramar always has US Army, Air Force and Navy Military Police personnel working the show as well as the Marine MPs.

I was at nellis both days of aviation nation with a 100-400 AND a backpack... No problems fortunately. I did ask an AF security guy in th e parking lot if my backpack would make it thru- he said yeah and I had no problems.

Sounds like some officer has a friend who wanted to make some money with pics, complained about the tyros with long lenses diluting the prices, and the officer issued orders accordingly.

Then when people called them on it the officer back-peddled ... fast.

I'd prefer though to believe that some officer simply didn't understand.
