Too many people getting access to places they really shouldn't be simply because they maintain a blog or some such outlet. Just like an NFL sideline or Pit Road in racing, a flightline is no place to "play" photographer.

(*AFAIK, ICAS has little or no influence over military open houses...)

I may be reading too much into your post, but from looking at your website you don't do any more than that (maintain a blog and sell prints)either. Am I correct?

I routinely get media credentials to many airshow, motorsports and other events in the Vegas area, and I do no more than maintain a blog, and sell prints from these events. I do, however, offer certain prints back to the granting authority, be it the military or otherwise. I assure you that I don't "play" photographer.

What group of people do you object to being there? Quite honestly, I didn't meet anyone in the media pit that I thought shouldn't be there. Listeing later in the day, there was one guard screening the general public that was not allowing the long lenses. I heard him telling a few people they couldn't bring in their zoom lenses and needless to say there were some pissed off people.

I know your question was aimed at Jay, but I'm going to chime in here with my own experience...

I've covered the show at MCAS Miramar for the last four years and I've noticed an increasing number of non-media types being allowed access to the media pit. It's gotten so bad that legitimate credentialed photographers are having to compete with families, guests and who knows who else for room on the shooting platform. I have no quarrel with Marine veterans of the battle for Iwo Jima being allowed into the media area, but when there are little kids with point and shoots it's gotten out of hand. It was so bad on the first day that I left before the Blue Angels went up and didn't go back for the other two days.

I think if there's going to be a dedicated media area, then that who should be allowed access. Don't use it for a catch-all...

That doesn't make sense either. Why would they care? They don't have to carry it. I'd love to know the logic behind that one...

I'm merely venturing a guess, but maybe it has to do with why some large cities ban tripods and the such on busy streets. It's not so much out of concern for the photographer, but out of concern for everybody else around the overloaded photographer that is falling all over themselves and their equipment.

Now that explanation makes total sense. I understand what you mean there by "non-media" types.
