Hi. I was wondering what your favorite wedding lenses are and also if primes are favored over zooms. I'm thinking great indoor bokeh for the "pop" effect over shorter distances.

I have the great little 50mm 1.8mkII . I know it's as cheap as chips but I've got some great pix from it and as above I'm think if an 85 or 135 might complment it or just perhaps go for a midlength zoom. Whatever I get I do want great bokeh.

:)

I use a 24 to 70 . To me a zoom work great to keep up with the fast pace of a wedding.

24-105 F4 IS-L and 70-200 F2.8 IS-L on a 5DMK2 covers most situations adequately.

Plenty of threads about this in the wedding forum, and the wedding faq talks about lenses.

It depends on what you want to spend. The 85 1.8 is a great value. The 85 1.2 creates better images.

Although my go-to lens is the 24-105, I also have the 85 f/1.8 which is a sharp, lightweight, compact, bright and fast focusing lens.

But are you talking about achieving pleasing bokeh, or attaining best isolation from the background with minimum DOF - your "pop" effect? These are two difference concepts.

Interesting. Ive been reading tons about these 2, 85mm lenses as I like primes. There is however a staggering differance in $$$!!!£££ price between them but the results are hardly noticable. So I guess that sexy red ring on the 1.2 is worh $1k or so. Good times for Canon! Thats a lot of damn "wonga" for a bit of red paint imo. I've seen pix and read reviews on both of 'em and I could, in no way justify the red ring price tag.

That's a personal choice, of course, and why Canon offers both of them. I differ in my opinion, of course, as the 85 1.2 is my go-to lens for portraits. I have a few excellent lenses to choose from for portraits, but this is the one I grab and there most certainly is a difference in IQ far beyond that little red stripe. And, of course, quite a bit more speed which is where some of that price comes from.

But if you don't need the speed, the 1.8 is still a very fast lens with wonderful IQ at a very reasonable price. Probably one of Canon's best values.

I live by my 70-200 f/2.8 combo with my 10-22 f/3.5

if I had my choice, 16-35, 24-70, 70-200

a guy that second shoots with me and vice versa (who is a lot better well equipped) loves his primes

I used to think the same thing. But if you go to the link I'm providing and sit and learn how these things are made, you'll see why they cost so much.

Situation dependent, most of the day I use my 24-105, but the 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8 get a lot of use. I also love the 70-200.

Outside of the ceremony; 24-70 for the bread & butter shots. 135 for everything else.
