I have recently upgraded from a 300D to a 20D. Installed all the new software and when I connect to the PC and turn on the 20D I do not get an option of transferring images using any of the Canon Tools. Only optios are Microsoft Office Document Scanner, Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard and Photoshop.

I have completely rebuilt a new PC but still have the samee issues.

I have a CF reader and have copied the files this way but this problem should not happen

Also have found that the JPG images from the 300D are saved as 180 dpi whereas the 20D are at 72 dpi. What are the implications of this.

Anyone had this issue?

Many thanks and cheers from OZ.

Mike

Have you checked the communication setting in the Menu. I think it should be Normal although PTP will work in Windows XP.

EOS 20D(w remote switch), 17-40 f/4 L, 70-200 f/4L, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, TC 1.4X, 580EX (w/off camera shoe), Canon S500, Apple Powerbook G4 867 w/Photoshop CS2

mdane, I recently did the same upgrade and found that uninstalling all of the old software and then reinstalling the new corrected the problem. Being you have already installed the new software I would suggest uninstalling both prior to installing the new. This is the easiest way to correct the problem without getting into computer lingo.

As to the dpi, mine always sets that when I transfer as I always shoot in RAW format. I am sure somewhere there would be a setting for that but whenever I am in question about computer stuff I just click the help file for that program and do a search. Believe me, there is always help somewhere and if all that fails try google.

I think the new 20D software is much better than what I had with the Rebel because I no longer need to download and then switch programs to edit the RAW image. Drop the old software as it's no longer needed unless you still need the driver for the Rebel.

Thanks Randy

Only problem is a built a new PC and only installed the 20D software so there are no leftovers from the 300D/Rebel

I have spoken to Canon Australia who don't have an idea

I will keep looking

many thanks

Otherwise, if you don't have a driver problem with the computer still looking for the old camera there is an application called CAMERA WINDOW.

If you go into uour programs and run this application there are configuration settings that allow you to set what you want. You may want to try that route first.

The program of course is under Canon Utilities and you may need the camera plugged in before you can run it.

I don't mean to keep adding new posts here but I also read my cards from a card reader and when I plug that in there is no Canon utility that will automatically ope because they only work with the camera being connected. If you run the EOS Viewer program you can only work with the images after you drag them to a locak drive. As long as they are on the card my computer won't let me edit but only view.

Nothing opens them automatically, I just need to open that drive and drag the folder to my local drive.

Hope this helps... Otherwise, I am clueless on your problem.

Thanks Randy

The problem is that with the 300D I could use Canon software to download images from the Camera to the PC. Now no matter how I try there is no way to use Canon Software to download them.

With the Card Reader though it is not the end of the world and I can get by.

The dpi thing is intrigueing though

regards

Mike

Mdane, first of all, the DPI issue (or non-issue) has been addressed many times in this forum.

Second, you say that you have a card reader, but it isn't clear which interface you are trying to use to transfer image files to the computer. Camera via USB to the computer, or CF card via card reader to the computer.

Hint: The easiest method is the card reader.

On my computer, I have a card reader plugged in and ready. I pop one CF card into the reader, and the card reader's Active light turns on. About five seconds later, I have the DCIM folder (from the CF card) popped up on my screen, all ready to go. I don't want to launch any utilities right then and there, because the files are still on the CF card. So, I copy the files to the hard disk, then start a RAW converter.

What Canon software are you using? The only one that allows you to transfer images directly from your 20D to your computer is EOS Viewer Utility. The communication setting for the camera should be Normal (use PTP for connecting the camera to something like a pictbridge printer).

When the dialog pops up after connecting your camera, you have to exit out of it then go into EOS Viewer Utility. The camera will show up at the top of the file tree, and you can copy the images from the folder on the CF card to your PC.

The instructions in the software manual that comes with your 20D is pretty clear about how to set things up.

I think you are confusing pixel dimensions with resolution. Your image has given pixel dimensions, ie around 2400x3600 (can't remember, it's very early). When you download an image, that is what you get. The dpi is only of relevance when you alter, save or output the image. It does not matter what it says when you download it.

Look at it like this;
You have an image 720 pixels wide. If you display it on a screen at 72dpi it will look fine, because that is all a screen will resolve. If you try to print it 10 inches wide (ie at 72dpi) it will look terrible, because print needs something in the region of 300 dpi to look really sharp. SO...... the same image will look good on the monitor at 10 inches wide, but will only print about 2.5 inches wide to get good quality.
I think there is a better explanation of this here somewhere, but can't find it.
When I open an image from my camera in Photoshop it ALWAYS says it is 72dpi. Doesn't mean anything, because it has a LOT of pixels, and at that resolution would be 40 inches wide!
Hope this helps a bit.

Never tried Camera Window ... I didn't think it worked with the Canon 20D. Is this the camera you are using it with?
