I called Canon. The tech dept said I should return it to a location in Newport News, VA. He said I send in a copy of the receipt and they will repair under warranty if it's eligible. If not I will get an estimate. But he wouldn't give me any indication of whether it would be eligible. But I don't have much choice anyway.
So unless you guys scream don't send it to Newport News I guess that's what I'll do.
Newport News is the home of Canon Virginia (CVI), they have an entire department doing refurbs for all Canon stuff and also a service department with a guaranteed 1 day turn around for pro service.
Their calibration room is very nice and i believe that all lenses that passes through pass through there before shipping out.
I would have no bad feelings about sending my stuff to them. If it is fixable, you will likely get it back in better optical shape than before. As for the rest, battle scars are cool...
I do business (another section) wih CVI but have seen the interesting areas, and they do make a good impression. It is also where they store all the white glass that is lent to pros during major events and these are serviced between each time field trip.
I played around with some nice pieces I will never afford.
