I need a new project and would like to make a bag. Are there any bags or accessories that you wish existed? I was going to make one for my 18" beauty dish but I haven't used it as much since I got Elinchrom gear so I might go for something else. Got any ideas?

This will be constructed with mil-spec materials and sewing techniques.

I've always thought a "combat photographer" bag/pack made to mil-spec with modular options would be awesome. However, I've found nothing dedicated to the task. TadGear - tadgear.com - which makes some great packs was working on a prototype but it was never brought to production for cost reasons. That would have been the best/closest possible thing as they never doing anything less than 100%. I've also seen a couple posts here where guys have used a modified version of a Maxpedition bag which looked interesting. Another option I've thought about modifying is a Kifaru bag or pack. Some of their models might get your creative juices flowing. Check out:

There have also been a few posts on the usualsuspectnetwork where guys have discussed the feasibility of such a bag and suggested some various options. I'd be very interested to see what you come up with!

I actually have some TAD Gear gear and Kifaru packs, both companies make top-notch products. I'll check out the usualsuspectnetwork though, thanks for the tip.

Nice! I've got a Litespeed from them which is just awesome and I've always thought highly of Kifaru's stuff. I end up using the Litespeed for my photo gear often but it's a little overkill and cumbersome for some situations. Their Dispatch bag looks interesting, I've always thought something along those lines could be really useful with the right implementation.

I've made several things, not all photography related but here are a few examples:

Very nice range bag. I still like the idea of the remote holder. :)

Very impressive!

How did you learn how to do that?

haha I haven't forgotten about that. I even got some hidden magnetic snaps (which were used in the front flap of the first bag I posted ^) that I can use for it. I probably wont have time to work on it until the end of July though, when I get back from my honeymoon :D

Thanks! Practice :)

I had my mom teach me how to use a "standard" sewing machine in middle school so I've always known the basics. However, It wasn't until recently that I got into bags and tactical gear. For that stuff I had to teach myself. The easiest way to learn is to look at existing bags and gear and reverse engineer them.

Speaking of tactical gear, here's a vest I made:
