A while back I was talking to a photographer and he had a great idea.

Basically you go to a beauty shop, and organize a special portrait day. They advertise their customers and on a scheduled day, the ones that are interested will come in, get their hair worked on *money for them* even if they just came in recently, then they come over to my area and I do some head and shoulder type portraits.

Its probably a good idea to schedule this no earlier than a month after contacting them because most of their clients will have come in to get their hair worked on during that month and will be able to hear about it.

The problem I have is around here, most hair stylists are in a trailer or something like that. Don't get me wrong, the inside can be quite nice, I seen one that was 2 trailers in a row and the inside was all fancy and mirrors. But there isn't a ton of room to setup a background *worst case hang a sheet/muslin off of the wall, but I think Id have to use the wider side of my 24-70 and that's not usually that flattering.

So I was just wondering if anyone here has done something like this?

What would you call this type of portrait session?

Did you offer the salon incentive to let you do this, like 10% of the sales?

Did you take a sitting fee to book the appointments?

Any suggestions for setting up inside a small space like this?

Its probably to late to do something like this before Christmas, I wonder how this would fare in January, with people being tight with money.

I "had" a makeup party scheduled for today that I "was" going to shoot. It was sponsored by a makeup company and I was going to set up and shoot head shots of the girls and a few candids. They canceled on me last night.
I am a little bent out of shape about it as I had to pass on another gig to do it and silly me, never asked for a retainer.
They had been talking about doing a number of them for a while but I have yet to shoot one. Basically it's like a Tupperware party that the reps hold to show new product.

I've never done one, but really like the idea. I would not give the salon a share as, arguably, we are both driving business for each other.
