So, I just sold my Canon Rebel XS to a local seller and then right after that I walked to our nearest Bestbuy and got a Canon 7D. Originally, I had wanted to buy just the body and then buy a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC lens, but, the store only sells one with kit lens and we checked all of the stores in the DFW area and none of them sold just the body.

Anyway, long story short, should I sell my kit lens which is a 28-135mm IS lens and get a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 like I had originally wanted? Or should I instead look for a wide-angle lens to complement the 28-135 lens?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I would sell the 28-135 and get the Tamron.

What's your budget? I sold my kit lens and upgraded to the 24-70 f2.8L I almost ended up with the 24-105 f4.0L and I think both are great walk around lenses.

I found the 7d more picky about lenses, due to the extra resolution. Of your choices, the Tamron, but I've got to where I like to shoot mainly primes on the 7d. The Sigma 30 and Canon 60 are a great combo.

I had posted a thread earlier today (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=961317) and from there, my decision was the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. My budget is up to $500-ish. I cannot afford an "L" series yet but I will definitely be upgrading to an "L" series in the future.

I will be getting a Canon 50mm f/1.8. I had it but I sold it as a package deal when I sold my XS.

Thank you. I am leaning more and more towards this decision.

I'd sell the 28-135. This is a funny focal length range on a 1.6X for such a slow lens. It's a lot like having a 70-200 on FF (but wider on the wide end) but the aperture makes the difference.

I cannot imagine many FF shooters being excited about a 50-200 f/5-8 zoom which is pretty much how this lens behaves on 1.6X.

I'd much prefer a 17-50/2.8 type lens.

I think it is a good idea to get the Tamron, but you should scan the sell forum for this lens. The market is flooded with these right now from all the kits folks are breaking up and you are about $100 over what they are selling for here.

Not sure if that changes your mind about keeping it or not.

I realized that after I posted it. I've changed it a little bit. :)

Get the Tamron 1750 f2.8 VC. In the past 2 years I've had probably twenty Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS lenses in my hands, just had three of the Sigma 1750 f2.8 OS (still have one actually), and also three of the 1750 VC lenses (within the past month). Each has their respective strengths, but that Tamron gives a ton of bang for buck. The build quality is solid, the optics were terrific overall, and the VC unit is rock steady (IMO the best of the bunch). Its AF is the slowest (not that slow) and noisiest (not that bad) of the lenses but otherwise it's a tremendous value.

Before you buy the Tamron, read this: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=955155

Frankly, the 28-135 is a very capable lens. I use one as a backup for my 24-70 and it's nearly equal in image quality. Hard to tell images apart, one lens to the other.

The focal length range on a crop camera is a bit odd for some folks, but I really like it: normal to moderate telephoto. Add an UWA and you are all set with a nice, two lens kit. Canon 10-22 or Tokina 12-24 would be my choice to pair with the 28-135.

Then over time pick up a few fast primes at your favorite focal lengths, if needed.

I bought the SAME kit you did.

I ended up selling the lens and got $256 for the lens on Ebay.

So, at least you know you should have that much money to work with if you sell it!
