On my desktop with XP, when I put the CF card in the card reader, a series of options appears with the query, "What do you want to Windows to do?".
On the list is "View/Download Images using CanonZoomBrowser EX".
Selecting that option brings up the little window for ZoomBrowser EX with buttons to choose either "Download Images" or "Lets you select and download images".
The "Lets you select ... " option shows a preview of the RAW files and lets you select which you wish to download, and then you can also rename the files and have them copied to a folder on your hard drive of your choosing.

Last time I tried the cardreader, I got a pop up window asking what program I wanted to use to open the photos. Zoombrowser was on there but not DPP. As they were RAW files I didn't select Zoombrowser. I think/thought Zoombrowser could only handle jpgs and not RAW files. I wound up opening up DPP separately, and DPP saw the photos somehow, but then I wasn't sure what was going on, so I opened Lightroom and Imported them into there. Normally, I like to process the RAWs in DPP and then send them to Lightroom.

Plenty of software, some free, that does that for you ;)

I use ImageIngester and a card reader. Does everything Eos Utility does, and more.

I checked out ImageIngester. Apparently, the current version is not free as older versions were. Can you advise what some other free software is that will create a logically named folder (by date is how I usually work) and put the photos in there?

Downloader Pro reads the EXIF metadata of each photo and correctly places each photo in date-based folders and also renames each photo into my preferred file-naming format.

I'm trying to get a handle on this, as it's a bit confusing. Is my problem that I'm using a card reader without special software that eases the use of the cardreader?

I'm beginning to think that's my first problem. Then my second problem might be getting the photos into DPP once I get the files to a logical place on my hard drive. EOS Utilities did this all automatically.

Did you see my comment that ZoomBrowser has a card reader utility? That would be the quick thing to try -- install it if you haven't, then when you start it on the left side panel you will see an Aquire and Camera Settings tool/button. Before you click that, you can plug in the Card reader with a card with photos. Then, when you clcick the aquire button it will open a new dialog and you will see a Preferences button. You will see various options for folder destination and folder naming and a few others to check out (like whether you want it to automatically open when a card is inserted).

Now, I don't use this tool myself because I use Lightroom for the importing and organizing of my photos, so I have only opened this up to test it out with just one card with one image one time.

Right off the bat I saw no file nameing part of the download, which I miss from Lightroom. But, there is you will note a button to View and Classify in the main window that includes file renaming. There is also a couple quick trips to DPP from there, by choosing the Edit button in the button panel and then edit in DPP (it'll open your current folder of images) or you can choose Tools/Process Raw files in DPP.

Also note in the file renaming section if you start with the File naming Settings you can choose various options, so it sounds like ZoomBrowser has a lot of stuff you can use -- check it out!

OK I'm on a mac so it's called imagebrowser instead of zoombrowser, but otherwise the same.

When I insert a card the Canon MCU auto starts (this is part of zoombrowser)

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

Now I have gone into the preference section and told it where I want my files to go and to put them in a year taken folder, and to ask me for a new sub- folder name, you can set it up to put it in various formats of dated folders.

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

From now on each time I put a card in the reader I just get asked for the new sub-folder name and it automaticly download to the correct place.

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

Now imagebrowser/zombrowser will show both raw and jpegs, but I use DPP, so in the DPP preference you can set it to open at either a set folder or the last folder used.

I see no need for any other software of messing about with dragging file from card to folder via the OS.

Ah, thanks for putting those up there! The one other thing I would consider a "must" part of the process is the image renaming that you get to from the main tool section.

Yep.

Tom, please reread my post #28. It's easy to do this with ZoomBrowser.

OK. I'll check out Zoombrowser. I guess I missed where that was talked about above. Thanks.

Tom, I think that's your answer. Poke around a bit on all the options and tools -- I am not a ZoomBrowser user per se, but I am pretty impressed with what they offer once poking around a bit.

I see no need for any other software of messing about with dragging file from card to folder via the OS.

As you stated you're on a MAC...on the Windows side things are a bit different. My current operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit but before that I was running Windows XP Professional X64 Edition (that too is a 64-bit OS). Well, guess what? With the exception of DPP; no Canon software would install or run on the 64-bit version of Windows XP. So if I wanted to take advantage of better memory utilization and processing power I had to find alternative solutions. It became a chore to keep a laptop with 32-bit XP just so I could sync the clocks on my cameras, for example.

I realize that the OP is using a 32-bit system so he doesn't have the same issues I had but you can't make blanket statements without understanding the unique requirements of a particular situation or even an operating system.

In any event the software I suggested, Downloader Pro, is based on Canon's SDK. More importantly it combines features found in EOS Utility and Zoombrowser into one package so there's less worry about incompatible software. (I don't have to worry about using one program to communicate with my cameras and another to download images). Its also infinitely more powerful and user-friendly than the downloaders found in EOS Utilty, Zoombrowser, Adobe Bridge, or Adobe Lightroom. For a hobbyist it probably doesn't matter, but when time counts you want to use the most efficient tools.

As already pointed out ZoomBrowser will do this for you. My personal preference is to avoid messing around with two programs when I can get all the features I need in just one.

All I do is what has worked for me for years on my XP os; place card in reader then place reader on computer. Window pops up and I click the folder till I get to my files, select all then copy. Open DPP to the desired folder then paste images.

Hey, whatever works for you! I personally like to download, rename/set a destination and then import into my Raw processor in one easy step.

Also, I've found the Windows Auto thing to be a bit sporadic, especially when it comes to Raw files. Sometimes it pops up, sometimes not, which why I use the LR Import function. On my laptop I figure I'll turn on the ZoomBrowser stuff since I don't use LR on it. But dang, not long ago I decided to check out Picasa just out of curiosity (and to give my daughter an alternative and guess what? Picasa recognizes my Raw files and now I have to get that to stop turning on -- headaches:)!

Hi Guys & Gals!
Well being old and lazy I just do it a bit different here! All I do is click on Dpp and then a box comes up on the screen and ask me to put card in drive g I then put my disk or card ( what ever you want to call it ) in to that drive and low and behold my pictures are in Dpp ( automagically like the guy on tv said).
As you can see it only took one click of the mouse and my feeble hand to put the card in the drive. Come on guys this is not rocket science!!

Dave
