For my 50th birthday I bought myself the MkIV, a new desktop and backup solution (Drobo). Tomorrow, I am turning 51 so I topped it with the Premiere CS5 to compliment my Photoshop CS5. Now I've got to learn this programme, but I hope that I will get a reasonable grasp within some months. Thing is that the video on my camera is so good, I feel I've got to complement it with an outstanding videoediting programme. Should I update, that will cost only a fraction.
Anyone with previous experience of this program?

Premiere CS5 is an excellent choice if you have a fairly fresh Nvidia GPU to use the Mercury Playback Engine. I haven't had to render for a while.

Got a triple-core 2,8 mhz processor and a Radeon HD4650 graphic card. Works well with 8GB ram, but thinking about upgrade of processor and graphic card. 4gb memory cards still too expensive. Vista can handle 16gb so I would need four of them, but prices will come down - and then.

Bit confused by that post...

Anyway CS5 works brilliant even with budget GPU's. I have an old 8600GT and I can edit 7D files smoothly on my old core2quad.
Get CS5, see how it performs on your system... if you still feel you need a CPU or GPU upgrade after that then fair enough, but I'd guess you'll be satisfied.
I've only run into trouble with highly intensive effects/multi-layered video, which is rare.

You should get a Nvidia card to enable the Mercury playback engine. You don't need to get an expensive card that is officially supported because you can do this little trick http://www.dvinfo.net …ossibly-all-200-gpus.html (external link)

Are Nvidia-cards the only ones supporting the Mercury playback machine?

Yes. It requires CUDA support from the card.

Have been checking out nVidias GTX 480 card, but user reviews are mostly critical. I am worried mostly about heat consumption. Videoediting means very long periods of intensive use, and I wonder if I may have to change the card annually?
Anyone with experience of a good nVidia card that matches my Premiere Pro. Right now I running a ATI Radeon HD 4650?

Tanks for all advice

If you have a properly designed computer with the correct fans and heatsinks, there is no reason to have to change the video card yearly.... I should last as long as all the other components...

Where did you hear of changing it?

I would say to buy the best on that you can afford within the budget that you set.

I did read a test of that nVidia card on the net where they had measured max worktemp. of the GTX480 to 97 dgr, Celsius, boiling temp. The HD4650 has a comsumption of 48W, the GTX480 up to 250W. i don't know under what workload the temp is 48W on my card tough.

Got a new quadcore computer with Nvidea card plus a Drobobox with 8tb of storageplace for films and pictures. Tried to upgrade the triprocessor model with a quadcore without success. Got so tired, I bought a new rig instead. I did spend a weekend on the upgradeattempt, then I figured out how about working and leaving pcbuilding to those experts.
