I remember a couple of years ago seeing pathetic "winning" photographs for the NG reader photo contest. Landscape was a reflection of a deciduous tree on a car that any Joe could have taken, and a static, bland photo of a bison snorting fog/mist for wild life. Many from the link provided were far better than the 2 I mentioned that won a category a couple of years ago!

I found many to be truly great shots . . . but in many cases the photographer was in the right place to get the good shot. Sometimes that was luck, sometimes it was planning. So a big part of the "skill" in their photography is positioning themselves to catch the right image at the right time. That is a big part of photography often overlooked . . .

I only hope I can someday see a shot like that in a mundane daily situation. 5D, 10D, G10, the required 100 macro, 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f2.8)
