My first 24-105 had creep straight out of the box. The second one did not. Just luck of the draw.

Will storing the lens upside down mounted on the camera in the bag more prone to lens creep. The front element is quite heavy and creating more stress on the gear?

Don't worry, the 24-70 has it's own issues.

FWIW, I've had a few 24-105's and none of them ever creeped.

Maybe but I doubt it. What I think has done it in my case though is storing it that way with the hood attached. Not because of the weight when it is stored but because taking it in and out of the bag is zooming it in and out by the hood rather than by turning the zoom ring, which cannot be good for it.

Yes, as Ken states, the hood is tight in the bag and pulling the lens out will drag on the hood and pull the lens to the 105 mm position. Might be best to dismount the hood when storing in a tight bag.

Did the fix. Made no difference. Still creeps slowly.

Oh well, life goes on.

Still makes me wish I'd never sold my $100.00 EF 28-105 f3.5 to get this one.

Will shoot anything that catches my eye. Particularly drawn to anything on or near water. Still trying to find my photographic niche!

How about sending it in to Canon.

Yup - It make sense and I can see that every time I take the lens out it pulls on the zoom.

Yep, so much for this L build quality. It's been a known problem since day 1 and Canon has no interest in correcting the issue. The latest build's still contain this problem.

Here's my two cents:

Bought a 24-105L second-hand. Noted the (substantial) creep when I bought it, as pointed out by the seller. Brought it home and applied black electrical tape, lengthways, to each side of the inner barrel. Problem solved, no creep.

Probably cost about two cents.

Just did the same thing myself - works like a charm.

I'm a big fan of underdog lenses, but my 28-105 was a dog compared with my 24-105, this is f/4 on my 24-105...(try the electrical tape - worked like a charm for me)....
