How about sending it in to Canon.

Thought about it, however it is well out of warranty. It may come to that one day though. I did the tape fix and it seems to be holding for now. The whole tape thing just kind of weirds me out though.

The lens shoots well and the creep is only a pain when it is swinging at my side on the BR RS-7.

Will shoot anything that catches my eye. Particularly drawn to anything on or near water. Still trying to find my photographic niche!

How do you like your G11 - I'm looking into the new Fuji X100

Absolutely love it. I always have it with me. It's gotten me some great pics. :D

Just did the same thing myself - works like a charm.

Here's my two cents:

Bought a 24-105L second-hand. Noted the (substantial) creep when I bought it, as pointed out by the seller. Brought it home and applied black electrical tape, lengthways, to each side of the inner barrel. Problem solved, no creep.

Probably cost about two cents.

Dont have creep on mine, but isn't there a chance that the tape would lift/move/etc causing the sticky residue on gum up the barrel?

Just had a look at doing the DIY fix. Underneath the zoom ring there are no obvious screws but there is a piece of thin foil held on by tape, approximately 10mm long. Are the screws under this?

Underneath the focus ring there is a small hole. As you rotate the focus ring a couple of small screws appear through the hole. Are these the screws to tighten??

Confused now and don't want to touch the wrong ones

My understanding is that it's the screws under the focus ring that need to be tightened.

Maybe this helps?

Peel back the rubber focusing ring and rotate the ring until three (or four) little screws line-up with the access hole on the ring. Those little screws tighten or loosen little teflon spacers that control the 'barrel creep'. If you tighten them (very, very slightly), you should eliminate your barrel . Remember, 'less is more' when adjusting the tension on the barrel. Quote

Ah, the focus ring. They are there. You have to locate the hole in the ring, and then rotate it to get to each screw.

Pictures coming soon...

OK, here's a quick snapshot. There are 3 screws. You just rotate the focus ring to align with each one. Make sure you get a good-fitting screwdriver so that you don't round them off. Adjust minimally, perhaps 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn.

EDIT: Note - apparently, there have been some stories of success with this adjustment, and some stories that claim no improvement was made. Since my lens didn't have creep issues to begin with, I can't state with certainty that adjusting these screws did improve things. I note that later in the thread, somebody did adjust them a great deal and claimed no improvement. So, I guess it's fair to say "tweak at your own risk", since the reward is questionable.

I didn't think my 17-55 had any problems. But then the other day, someone yelled at me, "Hey you lens creep".

It seems I don't need to post any pictures of what I thought were the correct screws

Whilst I spent several hours in the pub the POTN fairies have answered my prayers and posted pics of exactly what I needed to see. Its the screws under the focussing ring

Thanks as usual guys :D:D:D
