...tape on the barrel = phenomenally bad resale value.
I wouldn't buy one that had been "modified" like that.

The screws did nothing for my creep. I adjusted minimally each time, starting with 1/8th turns. After getting nearly a full turn, my lens creep is exactly the same.

I should have posted a disclaimer - my lens doesn't have any creep, so while I made a small adjustment, it wasn't going to fix what wasn't broken. I was passing on what I gathered from the original post on how to reduce or eliminate creep.

This is clearly a problem with this lens, as MANY people on this, and other forums have brought to light. I don't think I should have to spend $$ with Canon and have to wait for adjustment for a problem that is clearly a manufacturing fault.

Any lawyers out there?? This is a clear case for class action to force Canon to recall.
Anybody got any ideas??vmad

Class action?? I would be more inclined to chalk it up to wear. Moving parts, rubbing one another will wear. I suspect that there's some sort of nylon bushing that can be adjusted so that as the parts wear, they can be retightened.

I'm a HUGE Canon fanatic and I'm certainly not someone who files lawsuits on the drop of a dime, but it is apparent to me that this PARTICULAR lens is the one that is most complained about on this and MANY other forums regarding lens creep.

There may be other lenses that occasionally have the same problem, but you don't hear a clamor of complaints as you do for the 24-105.

The only reason I mention class action is because this is a case where Canon is NOT listening to their customer base and refusing to resolve a manufacturing issue that is without question their quality control problem.

This is no different than any other product that a manufacturer has been forced to deal with after customers rise up and take it to a different level.

The point is that that even the "threat" of a class suit would probably wake Canon up and get them to "fix" the problem for owners, regardless of warranty time limits, in order to correct a manufacturing deficiency that doesn't show up for most until AFTER the standard warranty expires.

Owners should NOT have to pay to resolve a quality control issue that is affecting many many owners of this lens.

Zoom creep is common among zoom lenses that extend when they zoom - especially as they age. Lenses that don't do this are more the exception than the rule.

Your kidding, right? You do realize that the tape can be removed in like 30 seconds.

Would love to do it - been pained with the mild creep almost from day 1. But it just sounds cruel ;)

This thread is the first time I'd heard of zoom creep with this lens, and it's been out for a few years now. If you want to see a lens that is prone to creep, look at the 28-135 IS!

If the lens is under warranty, owners DON'T have to pay to resolve a QC issue. If the lens creeps 4 years down the road, it is likely wear from use or from repeatedly yanking it out of a tight bag with the hood attached (which will pull the lens to full extension in my experience).

I am vehemently against any kind of class action lawsuit over something so trivial.

I am new here so sorry to open up old wounds but I have had this lens for about 6 months and this problem came up. I do not know at what point creep becomes unacceptable. I found this video that shows this problem. Is this acceptable? This is my first L lens.

Very true, but the adhesive from the tape could be on there for some time.

First off alot of lenses have zoom creep. 17-55, 28-135, this one.

Think about how many 24-105's are out there... a ton. It makes it well known even easier.

I try to stick with internal focusing lenses or ones that have a focus lock.

The zoom creep of this lens was one of the reasons I decided for the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM instead. It has a zoom lock.
