Editing Avi files

I want to edit my AVI files using my computer but when I use any program that usually functions well with avi files those created using my Canon G3 throw up an error message " No suitable video decompressor is available"

Anyone got any ideas what the problem is?

I tried opening the file in After Effects - no go. Quicktime 6 can, however, open the file. You can then export it to another more useable format, probably no compression would be the best to retain as much quality as possible.
I'm using the 'pro' version of QT.

I use the PRO version of Quicktime too. I've joined several AVI videos together, and saved them for the web in a smaller, more compressed format. I've edited others.

It also works well in creating time lapse videos of photos made with the Remote Capture software or the intervalometer function. I just made a 2 hour time lapse of an ice cube melting for my daughter's science class.

Install yourself a M-Jpeg codec (a file that goes into windows), and you won't have a problem editing them with ANY software... a good one comes from morgan multimedia, but there are others...

Cheers,
Stuart
