Rebel XT and B&W

Exploring the many functions og the XT and shot some B&W photo's or so I thought. When I pull the up on Photoshop Elements 3 Raw...... they are colored. What gives?

i think RAW is always in color. i may be wrong. you can only view the b&w image if it were written in jpg. i believe if you shoot RAW+jpeg, then the jpeg will be b&w and the raw will still be color. sorry if my sentences are repetitive are repetitive.

That's correct. RAW images contain exactly what the camera saw. Any in-camera parameter changes (contrast, sharpness, B&W, etc.) do not effect the RAW image. If you want to see a RAW image which includes the parameter changes, you will need to use ZoomBrowser, supplied with the Canon CD.

I'm not near my home computer at the moment, so I don't remember the exact steps. You select the RAW image in ZoomBrowser. On the left-hand side, you can select to Edit RAW Image. What's nice is you can select from the different filters and see immediately how it will effect the image. Once you get the photo how you want, you can then save the image as TIFF or JPG and edit in Photoshop.

I think this is the only RAW editor which maintins the in-camera settings. I can't remember, but perhaps Digital Photo Professional (DPP) does as well.

I guess the weird thing is that after the shot the LCD viewfinder image is in B&W. What if I shoot B&W in jpeg???

You have a color sensor.. It can ***only*** produce colored images...

The B&W you see in the viefinder is done by the camera.. The camera takes the colored image from the color producing sensor and using it's internal image processing software, it converts it into B&W.. It's essentially the same as taking this colored image then later using external processing software (Like Photoshop), convert the image to black and white..

The reason it shows you the processed black and white image in the viewfinder is because you asked the camera to produce a black and white image.. Canon could have had the color image pop up, but I guess the idea is to show you more exactly what you are going to get from the JPEG...

If you shoot B&W in JPG, you will get the B&W just as you expect.
