Hi

I am ready to purchase a flash for manual studio experimentation, using various softboxes and umberella setup`s, ala Zack Arias. What is the better flash between Vivitar 285 or Metz 60 ct-4?

Thanks in advance

The Metz flashes are super products that, over the decades, professionals have come to trust as dependable, reliable products. The Metz 60 flashes are among the most powerful portable (non-studio) flashes available.

I think the preceding message is exactly right (I have used Metz since about 1970), but many people starting out do use Vivitar 283, 285 or 285HV in this way. Look at strobist.com and the "strobist" group on Flickr.

The Vivitar units made prior to 1987 I highly trust as relaiable units, but the 283 older units have been reported as high as 600V, on Botzilla! And while the newer ones have safe trigger voltages, they are made in China...and while I am Chinese-American, that is a bit of the stigma like 'Made in Japan' had post WW-II and before the 1970's, and the eventual emergence of high quality products from there!
