Ok lets start off with a little Q and A, What makes light soft? Is defused light soft?

<rolls eyes>

Soft light comes from the size of the light.

I think you mean "relative size".

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Messing with this idea a while back, I took my 69" Elinchrom Octabox, set it up but didn't turn on the strobe. Instead I put a stand right in front with a 580EXII with the wide angle lens pulled out and set it up facing the center of the octabox with the lens flush with the front edges of the octabox. Then I did some metering tests and took a few shots. I didn't keep the results but at the time I was startled by how well it worked as an indirect source. Of course this isnt' practical but it did get me thinking that there is a lot more opportunity with speedlights than I had previously considered. Maybe I'll try this with the 74" Indirect Octabank just for fun.

I have a question about the westcott apollo sofbox. Is this really the only softbox that is portable and easy / quick to set up?

Always when I see people talking about softboxes that are easy to use and portable, it is always about the westcott. :p

No, not by a long shot. Plenty of other options.

Please share a few names. I am looking for my first softbox. I want it to be at least 28 inch, and very portable.

Right now I am looking at the westcott apollo softboxes, but I would like to see some alternatives.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Portable...no, there are several others that are easily as portable. To name some, we need to know what type of lights you are using.

As far as being portable, easy to use and versatile(ability to use it with nearly any light), I think the Apollo is in a class of its own...IMO.

I am using 580EX II and other hot shoe speedlites only.

Softboxes, when dismantled, are about the size of umbrellas collapsed! Speed rings are about 6" square and 1" thick...hardly bulky.

The 'issue' with softboxes is that beginners find them hard to put together and even harder to pull apart. Someone experienced can probaby assemble or dismantle in less than a minute. A first timer might struggle for 5-10 minutes to put one together or to take apart!

So portability is a non issue, as is set up time (for the experienced person). And the new collapsible version of speedrings are very fast and easy to use...just pricey to buy!

Wilt is right. After you get used to setting up and tearing down a soft box the "portability" becomes a non issue. One of my softboxes even comes with a bag. It is about 6 inches wide about 30 long and 2 inches deep. Just as easy to carry as an umbrella. I can set it up in about 3 minutes. If I left the baffels attatched it could be about 1 minute. I also have the 50 inch apallo. It sets up in about the same amount of time. The decision on what one to bring/use is based on the light I want or need, not what one is easier. So dont be afraid to consider a 'normal' softbox if it fits what you need.
