Background: We're aware the bride REALLY wanted to have her wedding after sunset and OUTDOORS. We are also are very familiar with the venue. Wilson Creek Winery has three outdoor ceremony site. Of course the bride selects the one with a dark brown exterior (WC also has a white gazebo). But at least WC was able to set up two flood lights pointing into the gazebo ceremony site.

For me I don't like flash photography much at all. Especially don't like flash outdoors. No place to bounce and the images look like cheap snapshots. But sometime you got to do what you go to do!

I will place images below and explain what we did to prepare to get the shots. Remember this is a wedding and not a commercial or model shoot. Everything must be done is minutes or seconds and move on. No one should be waiting for a photographer to set up! That's why we bring a ton of equipment to every wedding. See our BLOG (external link) in the photo gear section to see what we bring. It's a lot of stuff!

Image 1: Bride leaving building walking down aisle. Setup:

  • Camera Hand Held
  • Canon 5D MKII
  • 24-70mm 2.8L
  • ISO 1600
  • f2.8
  • 1/30
  • No Flash

Image 2: Pre-planned these shots. Remember WC has the flood lights pointing INTO the ceremony site. No choice but to use flash. BUT we set up (prior) a remote 508EX on a light stand off to your left as you are looking at these images. On board flash used also. Both flashes set in manual mode to get the effect we wanted. An image not so "flat" if using a forward flash only. It worked!
Setup:
  • Camera Hand Held
  • Canon 5D MKII
  • 70-200mm 2.8L
  • ISO 800
  • f4
  • 1/60
  • Flash - Yes - 2 of them

I think you handled the challenge pretty well. The first and last shots are my favorites!

Amazing work. I noticed pictures taken with a 5DII, 1DsII and IDIV. Where you using all three or did an assistant have the 1DsII? Just curious, because that's some serious firepower.

Hi Robert:

We learned a long time ago to "be prepared" .. not only regarding the venue and weather challenges but to always have the proper gear to support the job. It is a tremendous investment especially in the digital world.

Our wedding day gear list can be found on our BLOG (external link)
