Let me preface this with the statement, "WOW!! What a camera". Ok then, I purchased my 7D about 9 days ago at a local retailer and began the learning transition from my Rebel XS. I began to familiarize myself with the camera itself, its settings, the updated software that needs to go with it. In doing so I updated the firmware to 1.2.2. Thought everything was cool until I noticed that intermittently the camera would freeze. Freeze to the point where I had to take the battery out because even the on/off switch did not do a thing. I didn't know whether the firmware update had anything to do with it (as I did the update right after purchase), but upon the recommendation of the clerk, I retried the firmware update. This time however, I read ALL the directions, and it seems to have made a difference. The second time through I actually took the battery out after the update and then reformatted the card before use. Knock on wood, it seems to have been the solution. So, the moral of the story is to read all directions (I tell my students this all day long and now I am guilty of it! lol!).

I updated without specifically removing the battery after that. No problems.

Tell your students they can throw the instructions away and just trust pure luck! :)
