Second time I've shot Gladys Knight. The first is here (external link). She is a very powerful presence and very warm with the crowd. She had a one song limit but I allowed two songs as the first was a tiny short thing (I control the other togs and if I can't get it then I'll take the risk ... I actually think we could have gotten three songs allowed but her security guy was very relaxed so I didn't press it and all worked out well.)

#1 Obligatory collage:

#2 The general feel of the stage/audience.
IMAGE: http://dwightmccann.com/Images/GladysKnight11042010/fullsize/GladysKnight012.jpg

#3 This gives a sense of her connection with the audience.

#4 As one of my fellow photographers at this concert pointed out, her outfit against all that black presents some photographic challenges.
IMAGE: http://dwightmccann.com/Images/GladysKnight11042010/fullsize/GladysKnight033.jpg

#5 A bit of a duet.
IMAGE: http://dwightmccann.com/Images/GladysKnight11042010/fullsize/GladysKnight043.jpg

#6 And she can count!
IMAGE: http://dwightmccann.com/Images/GladysKnight11042010/fullsize/GladysKnight051.jpg

#7 300mm f/2.8L IS handheld from the lightboard.
IMAGE: http://dwightmccann.com/Images/GladysKnight11042010/fullsize/GladysKnight057.jpg

#8 And she still has some great moves!

There are a few more in the gallery on my website: http://dwightmccann.com …/GladyKnight11042010.html (external link) for you listening pleasure.

Well I guess against all that back backdrop she does shine like a true star in that outfit Dwight!

I think she is a star! LOL. But yes, she really pops in that outfit compared with everyone/everything else on stage.

How difficult is to get decent shots in a period of just two songs? Have not tried so far since a had almost "all the time in the world".

Not sure I understand your question but it can be anywhere from quite easy to quite hard to get a decent shot, even with the whole concert. I just shot Lee Greenwood and had the whole concert and I don't think I got anything outstanding. Mr. Greenwood is not pretentious, glamorous or a stunning showman. He is a musical talent of rare quality and a pretty "normal" human being with an inside track on patriotism. But he looked scruffy and pale and his lighting didn't add anything.

Having shot about 300 concerts I have to say that I have gotten my best shot as the first frame and my best shot as the last frame, but on average, the longer I can shoot the better my best images are. I have gotten images with a short one song limit.

So, there is no rule. I'll bet everything depends on many things like artists, lighting...etc. You can't get (every time) the best images but you can try to be as best as possible at given conditions. It's not always easy to be great. :)

She performed for our area a concert at one of the churches. She had a choir she organized from Las Vegas. It was awesome, no pictures were allowed, though since it was in a church. But she sounds amazing still, such a presence. You are right, she still has it and she can belt it out.

Hell, it's not easy to always be mediocre! LOL.

I believe she is a very nice person who reaches out to her communities.
