I use this function during sensor cleaning.
Otherwise, the camera will 'save' a very large 'all-white photo' after the sensor cleaning process.

Deleting an image is less of a problem than potentially bending pins, I'd have thought. Deleting is quick; but 'saving' image with the older EOS 400D can take up to 5-15 seconds.
