That was a fun little lens back in my film days, sorry you don't hear much of it anymore.

I have been considering starting a traveling lens project like "Where's Nifty?" with this lens instead.

Interesting FL that's for sure. What's great about Nifty is that's a prime and you're stuck at 50 to take shots. :D I'm love having Nifty right now.

Thats about all that lens was good for. Taking pictures of it.

All kidding aside I actually liked it it was light and had good range just didnt like the image quality or LOUD focusing.

there is a brand new in the box 22-55 for sale locally .... hmmm, I wonder if I should pick it up !

Try it out first. Mine overexposes by about a stop-flash or no flash.
Haven't looked into it any further, just an observation. Maybe sticking aperture blades?

It gets very wide on a 5D. You'll definitely want to use a hood with it. The EW-60D hood isn't very common but the EW-60C (18-55, 28-80, 28-90) also fits it. The lens is quite prone to flare and loss of contrast if the sun hits the front element. On a crop camera, the light fall-off and distortion isn't bad. On the 5D if you don't stop down, there is some peripheral darkening although usually you stop a wide angle down anyway.

The main draw to the lens is the very small size, very light weight, wide angle and quick focusing. My copy is quite sharp too. The main drawback is the flare problem for me.

Be prepared to work around its limitations and be aware that it is one of Canon's lenses from their low-end line so don't expect an L quality build at this price point.

It is quite a small lens. Here it is with the 38-76 and 50/1.8:
