The front element of that 17mm T/s is wicked! Do they make a lens hood for that? or filters?

Dave

No, unfortunately not (yet). The problem is that because it is a shift lens, you don't want a hood or filter to vignette the image, and when fully shifted the AoV becomes something like 140 degrees or thereabouts. That and the bulbous front elements, which is a design to allow for much better corner IQ, make it rather hard to design an effective lens hood, and obviously very hard to attach a filter or design a filter for use with it.

I have heard some people are having a go at trying to create a (convex) filter for it.

Kind regards, Wim

And some primes:

Now I need to go out more often and see what these things can do!

Great technical shot! Looks like a product spec shot from canon. I just picked this lens up again, so happy I did!

That thing is out of control!!! I would love to shoot with one!

Me too :D. Every time I take it out, it starts raining, it seems. However, based on the few test pics I've taken, this thing is sharp. Incredibly sharp. And then you realize it is an extreme UWA...

Beautiful shot by the way :)

Thanks!

BTW, did you recognize any of the other lenses in the picture :D?

Kind regards, Wim

Yep! The front one has to be the 50L (I recognize that because I've got one myself), I'm quite sure the one behind the 17 is an 85L, and the back one... Not too sure, it kind of looks like a 14L or possibly a 24L.

Very good! It is the 24L at the back. All taken with the 135L. :D

Here are the product pics of my 300 f/4 IS. I did have it up for sale but decided against it. The thing is just too good to sell ;) .

Nice! I am officially jealous that you have quite the lineup! I'm very happy with my lenses because it enables me to shoot everything that I need to do. I only still have to buy a long tele and I'm set. But you have lenses I definitely WANT :)

With product photos like that I'd buy the lens! I'm all about good advertising!

I've never tried the 300 f/4, but I've always heard good things. debating between this and the 400 f/5.6 (I could ad the 1.4x TC possibly, and I imagine they would meet in the middle?)

Lol, thanks AG. Now that I'm keeping it, I'm committed to finding more ways to use it. I very much dislike a lens that sits and since I bought back my old 100-300/4 the 300/4L IS has become a specialty lens for me.

If it helps in your decison making process, i use the 300 IS for humminbirds (it is the ultimate hummingbird lens imo), perched birds, larger bif (like gbh's), larger insects (dragonflies, butterflies), and large indoor events like graduations, plays, concerts/dance. I also shoot a lot of sports and it is excellent for daytime field sports, but the Sigma 100-300 f/4 is a thoroughbred in that arena.

I guess it depends on your applications whether or not you get the 300 or 400 (or 100-300)...

That is very interesting and helps quite a lot actually. I don't shoot BIF seriously (I've only tried a few times, but I did quite enjoy it) but I absolutely do shoot sports, volleyball is my big one, however I am shooting surfing more and more as well. Which got me thinking about the 400.

Personally I will not be buying anymore Sigma products as I have had a very negative experience with them and their customer service, but that's another story.

I will reconsider the 300 then when it comes time for me to get one, it's not a big rush because my 70-200 usually is enough for now. My priority is getting another 1D first :)

As long as we are talking about EF 300mm f/4L USM lenses, here is my non-IS version of it. It is also an excellent lens but it doesn't focus as closely as the IS model.
