Canon themselves love the 50/1.4. Or at least, I'm guessing they do, because they always feature it on the 1D images.

ya i find that kind of odd why dont they use a 50L or something i could see the 50 1.4 being used for lower end bodies but not the top of the line stuff:confused:

maybe the 50L is heavy enough to tip forward the camera body (with grip or 1 series)

anybody with the 50L who can confirm this?

-0-

but yeah, i like the look and size of the 50 1.4. compact, 1.4, gold trim, distance scale, etc

I had the 50L but, can't recall if it actually would tip over bcoz' of it's weight.

Sigma 2x tele. Lens cap can only go on one way, unlike the canon ones.

canon EF 75-300 USM II (shot with above camera/lens) Does anyone know if there is a difference between this lens and the current 75-300 USM III?

It does. It will tip forward on any gripped body (1 Series included). I can confirm this with my 5DmkII, my 1DmkIII and the 7D that I used to own, all gripped.

Though I should mention that without the hood it will stand upright with the 1D. But even the slightest wobble and it falls over.

My guess is that they want to show/market an affodable lens on an expensive camera. It demonstrates a couple of things...

  1. you can spend money on a good body and still get great results with the non-L lens (saving money)
  2. If you buy the non-L 50 for a non-FF body, you get the satisfaction of knowing (or thinking) that you are buying the same high quality lens that is used on a high-end body
It's all marketing and done very intentionally (and effectively).

I have (and love) this lens too. But this is not an "old, really old" lens...

Some cheap fixed focal lenses...

That's a really cool collection. I've had 3 of the 5 and was always impressed with these early EF primes. They are so small and light that it's never a burden to throw one in the bag just in case.

You should pick up a 135mm Soft Focus to round out your 1980's arc-drive prime collection. The 15mm fisheye as well, I guess.
