...............

The FL 50mm f/1.4 II was a different optical formula to version I (obviously) with an extra element and no radioactive elements. The optical formula is very similar to the FD 50mm f/1.4 SSC. The FL isn’t multicoated and it shows wide open as it has a hazy look, but the spherical aberrations contribute to this as well. There’s decent sharpness despite this and gives a great vintage look to the images, particularly portraits. Things improve considerably by f/2.0 which applies to all the lenses.

The FD 50mm f/1.4 SSC is very similar, but the multicoating gives it the edge wide open.

The FD 55mm f/1.2 SSC is wonderful! (Though not as good as the Aspherical version, but that costs a fortune!! ). It still suffers some haze wide open due to spherical aberrations, but they’re corrected better than the f/1.4’s. It’s fractionally sharper and by f2.8 it’s stunning. This is my favourite and it’s huge chunk of glass and metal (565 grams). It’s beautifully built as well with lovely smooth focus and the aperture ring glides in to each stop. It doesn’t feel cheap and the clicks are delicate, not harsh.

The FDn 50mm f/1.4 is similar again to the previous f/1.4 lenses, but lighter and smaller. Contrary to popular belief, the optics aren’t exactly the same as the FD f/1.4 SSC, element wise and the actual formula is, but they’re slightly smaller in diameter to make a smaller lens. .....
............

Thanks for the info.

A snapshot I sent to a friend to illustrate the differences between a "normal" 24-105mm lens vs a 70-200/2.8 vs the supertelephotos.
