The Canon EF 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5. This one is dated Nov 1987. (UB1103).
It is a decent lens but not quite as good as the EF 28-70mm 3.5-4.5 II. This one is smaller and less expensive though. This is one of Canon's few lenses where the filter thread retracts into the lens at some focal lengths. The above mentioned 28-70 does also as does the 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 USM (original version). Canon also made a less expensive 'A' version (autofocus only) of the 35-70 that omitted the focus ring, M/AF switch, and distance scale and weighed a bit less.

So you can't use filters with this lens?

You can use 52mm filters but you have to set the lens to 35mm to put them on. That is the only focal length where the theads come up to the surface. Zooming in retracts it into the lens. If you use a circular polarizer, you'd want to put a UV filter under it to make the ring easier to reach.

The filter thread also rotates during focusing.

Oh, that's sort of cool sounding, probably sucks though :)

I loved that little lens. I agree, not quite as nice as the 28-70 but, throw a couple of extension tubes on it and it's a killer macro tool. I regret selling mine.
